Anne LaVerne Lane Pehl, age 85, of Terry passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Prairie Community Nursing Home in Terry.
Anne was born on July 9, 1928, in Bismarck, ND to Vernon H. and Irene Anderson Lane. Anne was an only child. She was raised in Carson, ND and graduated in 1946 from Grant County High School. Anne graduated from MSU-Bozeman in 1950 with a degree in commercial science and was a proud member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Anne began teaching business and commercial at the Terry High School the fall of 1950 and met a wheat farmer named John Pehl. After dating and Anne threatening to move to Alaska to teach, they were married October 10, 1953. She lived on Broadview Bench the rest of her life.
Anne was a member of the Terry Community Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school and loved Presbyterian Women’s Fellowship (Priscilla Circle). She was a 50 year member of Ash Creek Homemakers. Reading was a hobby of Anne’s (a non-TV watcher). She was a great cook and enjoyed taking many dinners to the summer harvest fields. Anne sewed most of her own, Carol Anne’s and Mary’s clothes in early years and even Carol Anne’s wedding dress. Knitting was also a passion as evidenced by the family’s many hand-knit sweaters, afghans, and Christmas stockings. She gardened every summer raising flowers, vegetables and strawberries. Her outside chores included the chickens and barn cats as it “gave her fresh air every morning”. Anne was a staunch Terrier fan, loving fair play and good competition as well as following her children and grandchildren in many sports and locations. Education and respect for your teachers were very important and taught at home. All of her children graduated from MSU-Bozeman with agricultural related degrees, a tribute to the life and love they felt at home.
After 51 years of marriage, John passed away in 2005 and Anne lived four more years on the farm. In 2009 she entered the Prairie County Nursing Home. We thank the wonderful staff and residents for the love and care these five years. Her final words were “the cookies (Carol Anne’s) were wonderful!”
Anne is survived by her children Carol Anne (Tom) Sparks of Plevna; Andy (Nancy) Pehl of Terry; Wade (Velda) Pehl of Belle Fourche, SD; and Dr. Mary (John) LeMieux of Manning, ND; her grandchildren: Frank Sparks, George Sparks and William Sparks of Plevna and Katy Sparks of Miles City; Leslie Pehl of Circle, Erin (Jonathan) Elenbaas of Billings, and Ben (Rita) Pehl of Terry, Nathaniel Pehl of Bozeman and Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant Samuel Pehl of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Morgan, Hayes and Garrett LeMieux of Manning, ND; sisters-in-law Alice Pehl of Terry and Evelyn Jones of Cody, WY and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Growing up as a member of the Community Church, I recall Anne’s gracious presence at church functions. She was typically the one making sure everyone’s coffee cup was full! I suspect Anne’s greatest sense of pride was in her children. She and John raised four wonderful kids, who have been among Terry’s finest, and it appears the legacy continues in her grandchildren as well. To her family, please know that you are in my thoughts.

So sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful woman. She will remain Mrs. Pehl in my memories patiently guiding a room full of Sunday school students or graciously hosting a 4-H gathering (featuring excellent refreshments) at her home. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

To Mrs. Pehl’s Children and Grandchildren: It has been many many years since I met your mother at her home. At the time, Tom and Carol were getting married and Mrs. Pehl had a tremendous amount of responsibility on her shoulders to make sure the wedding went well. With the stress of a wedding along with relatives and friends coming, she was extremely nice to me. That is how I remember her…..a very nice lady.
Jackie Musgrove says
