Effie Young, 88, of Colstrip, our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2016. She was born June 14, 1927 in McLeod, Montana to John “Jack” & Lucy Coughlin and was one of 11 children.
The first twelve years of Effie’s life were spent exploring the mountains of East Boulder. As a child some of her best memories were of wildlife that she took in as pets, including: deer, skunks, and owls, among others. Effie left school at a young age to help take care of her family. She was at home in the mountains and loved the wilderness. As a teen, she would walk 12 miles to town to go to the store. As a young adult, she held many jobs, including being a dude wrangler, ranch work, school café, and the Ennis Café.
Effie met her love, Horace Young, in Big Timber. They were married the night before he was to be shipped out to serve in the US Navy. It would be 2 years until they saw each other again. After Horace returned from the Military, they started their life together in Lodge Grass, MT. They moved around for work and eventually settled in Colstrip, where they made their home. Effie spent several years working in the Colstrip School lunch program.
Some of Effie’s enjoyment was found in playing cards, games, putting together puzzles, and crocheting. For many years she was actively involved with the Colstrip Senior Citizens. She especially enjoyed taking trips to Ireland to visit her extended family.
After she lost the love of her life in April 1983, she kept busy in the following years helping her family and raising her grandchildren.
Effie was preceded in death by her parents; her dear husband Horace; children: Tiffany and Timothy (twins), who died at birth, and her son Rick, whom she lost only a few months ago; siblings: John Coughlin, Jr., James Coughlin, Bud Coughlin, Dorothy Mahan, Tom Coughlin, Donald Coughlin, and Nellie Hill.
Effie is survived by her sons Harold (Irene) Young of Colstrip and Randy (Debbie) Young of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter’s-in-law: Sharon Young, Bernadette Trottier, and Janice Lund; grandchildren: Rick, Jim, Harry, Jack, Kristy, Lee,Christopher, Travis and Chrissy; siblings: Delmar (Mary) Coughlin, Dick (Timnoy) Coughlin, and Caroline (Dennis) Sandage; numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren; and her special friends: Betty Peterson, and Dee Batey, who took care of her hair for many years. We will miss you very much mom! With great love, your family.

Effie was the sweetest soul loved by all. Never heard a harsh word come out of her mouth. My favorite memories of her was the holidays and playing dominoes. I loved her big smile and cute little giggle. Her grandchildren brought the brightest twinkle in her eyes. She will be sorely missed by the many people she has touched throughout her life.
