Fred Brown, age 78, passed away July 19, 2012 in Newport, WA.
Fred “Freddie” was the 4th of 7 children born to Ira and Minnie Milroy Brown in Jordan, MT on February 22, 1934. He moved with his parents in 1935 to New Deal near Fort Peck where his father worked on the construction of the Fort Peck Dam.
He attended school in Jordan. At a young age Freddie went to Fairbanks Alaska with his dad to work for the air force base during its construction. He worked as a kitchen assistant feeding the construction crew building the air force base.
Returning to Montana Fred enlisted in the US Navy and the USS Hector, a repair ship, became his home for the next 4 years. While on leave in Japan he met up with his brother William. Fred and his 4 brothers served in the Navy seeing action in several conflicts.
Upon his discharge he returned to Montana and went to work for Shennum Construction of Circle, MT which was the beginning of his pole-line construction career. Fred was a “trouble shooter”. He followed the work ending up establishing a residence in the Spring Valley area of Newport, WA.
In 1960 Fred was married to Linda Shoemaker and two children, Dale and David, were born. In 1983 Fred and Bonnie Keele were married. Bonnie passed away in January of 1995.
Fred was a lifetime member of the VFW Club. He also belonged to the Elks and Moose Lodges.
Upon his retirement Freddie enjoyed working in his yard and shop, entertaining his friends and family and caring for his one and only pet “Shop Cat”. Very seldom did Freddie miss a special occasion or reunion of his family or friends.
Fred is survived by two sons Dale and David Brown; brothers Adrian, Harold and Sterling Brown; sisters Margaret Cremer and Delpha Wood as well as one grandchild Allison Brown and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie; mother and father; brother William and nephews Delbert and Kim Rhoads.
Graveside services will be held on August 7, 2012 at 2:00pm at Custer County Cemetery. If friends desire memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
