Genevie K. (Jan) Diede of Miles City passed away on Wednesday, April 29th. She was born October 6, 1941 in Cooperstown, North Dakota to Clarence and Harriet Sandbo of rural Mose, North Dakota. She attended grade school in Mose and graduated from high school in Hunter, North Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Some of her most treasured memories are from her time in Mose on the farm. In 1959 she married Warren Grothmann in Hillsboro, North Dakota. From this union, Deanna, Debra, and Timothy were born. She later married Dale Diede in McClusky, North Dakota. They lived several places across Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana. In 1973, she and her children moved to Miles City after the unexpected death of her husband Dale. She was employed at the Miles City Clinic for several years, and then at the Olive Hotel for 16 years, retiring in 2006.
Jan was a strong, independent and resourceful woman. She was dedicated to her children and instilled in them the importance of working hard, doing your best and making a contribution. She had a lot of compassion for people and always rooted for the underdog. She was an amazing cook. Her family enjoyed many fabulous homemade meals and really loved her turkey dinners and Special K bars. She was delighted by each of her grandchildren and loved hearing weekly updates on their activities. She will be sorely missed by her family and all the people whose lives she touched.
Survivors include her 3 children, Deanna Langman (Scott) of Billings, Montana; Debra Maheux of Kent Island, Maryland; Tim Grothmann (Susan) of Elko, Nevada. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren, Alexandra South, Tyler South, Karly South, Jeffrey Maheux, Ryan Kison, Jason Maheux (Mary), Garrett Grothmann, Julie Maheux, and Jaymee Grothmann, as well as her 2 sisters, Carolyn “Cody” Carlson of West Fargo, North Dakota and Sharon Gamble (Larry) of Wolf Creek, Oregon; her 2 brothers, Sherman Sandbo (Mary) of Des Lacs, North Dakota and Tony Sandbo of Hillsboro, North Dakota. She had a special place in her heart for Marty South of Billings, Montana, Kollette Rightsell of Wellington, Colorado, and Renee Meyers Turner of Baxley, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, and her parents, Clarence and Harriet.
At her request, there will be no services in Miles City. Graveside services will be held in Hillsboro, North Dakota on Friday, May 8th at three o’clock at Riverside Cemetery. Deanna,Deb and Tim..I was so sorry to hear about Jan. I worked with her for many years at the clinic. I helped her with insurance when she started working Dr. Grierson and she was one smart lady. She learned things so easily. She was so nice to work with. We had many good times and tho I never saw her much after I left the clinic, when I did she was always so friendly. You had a wonderful Mother.
Enjoy your happy memories

Deanna, Deb and Tim, I was saddened to hear about the loss of your mother. It seems like we all grew up together in the same neighborhood, and our mother’s got along so well together. I know my brother and sister feel the same way. I will remember her for the woman of strength that she was. In later years when we both worked at the Olive, I had many visits with her after her shift. She was so proud of all of you and loved to talk of you and your successes. Once we celebrated our birthdays together since they were a day apart, a cherished memory in my heart. I will miss her for the woman that she was but I am comforted that a part of her lives on in each one of you. I am praying that God leads and guides you through this difficult time. May He comfort each one of you and may His peace rest in your hearts.
