Iris Irene Schenk Haines
January 3, 1929 to April 7, 2014
Iris was born January 3, 1929 to Max and Zella (Kohlmeyer) Schenk of Armells Creek west of Forsyth Montana. Early on the family moved to the head of Smith Creek where they ranched and farmed. The second eldest of five, Iris possessed a strong work ethic that would last her a lifetime.
She attended school on Smith Creek and graduated from Forsyth High School in 1947. Iris met, fell in love and subsequently married Larry B Haines on September 21, of 1950. The couple began farming outside Hysham and spent the next 47 years together raising crops and livestock. Each fall Iris drove grain, silage and beet truck while cooking for the crew and raising her children. Neither lived further than 30 miles from their place of birth.
In addition to being a wife, homemaker and Mother, Iris enjoyed dancing with Dad, gardening, playing cards, creating artwork and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. She was a self taught piano player who would liven up her day with a few tunes wafting on a summer breeze. She was a wonderful Mother who loved each and every one of her Grandchildren and Great grandchildren teaching them crafts and following their lives through visits, pictures and phone calls.
Multi-year community commitments include being a 4-H leader, Howard Homemakers Club, Rosebud County Cowbells and as an election official at the Howard School House.
Iris is survived by her four siblings, Charlie (Verla) Schenk of Lincoln NE, Gale (Barb) Schenk of Joliet MT, Mike (Ann) Schenk of Roundup MT and Mary (David) Holbrook of Sumerton AZ.
Children: Diana (George) Schmidt of Forsyth, MT and Rick Haines of Twin Falls, ID. Grandchildren: Janelle (Jake) Archer, Brad Schmidt, Reid (Leann) Haines and Erin Haines, eight Great Grandchildren and two Great-Great Grandchildren.
We all love Mom and you are already missed! Thank you for the guidance, charity, love and courage.
