Judith Wheeler passed away in Miles City on Tuesday, March 6th.
Judy was born on June 8, 1946 in Mattoon, IL to Elmer Jr. and Maxine (Decker) Wheeler.
In Judy’s young adult years, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in social work and was working on her Master’s at one time. She believed that education is the key to personal perseverance.
When she came to Montana she had a couple different jobs, including ranch work in the Birney area and working at St. Labre Indian School in Ashland.
Judy had adopted the Native American Church as her own and was active in prayer circles and meetings both in Oregon, Washington and Montana. Judy met the Medicine Bull Family at a prayer meeting and they later adopted Judy as their daughter, sister and auntie. Judy embraced the spiritual values and teachings of her Northern Cheyenne Family.
Judy enjoyed sewing, beading, reading, rock collecting and being out in the great outdoors. Some of her happiest times were swimming in the “Mighty Tongue River” in Birney and giving herself mud facials on the river bank.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents and younger brother, Mark.
She is survived by her brother, Jim (Twila) Wheeler of Cape Coral, FL, her sister, Sue (Bill) Dimitrakis of Painesville, Ohio, The (Katie) Medicine Bull Family, Larry and Rose Medicine Bull and special childhood & lifelong friend, Margie Burris of Stranton, PA.
The family would like to thank caregiver Bonnie Wooley, the staff at Bighorn Valley Health Center-Ashland, Rosebud Healthcare Center, Friendship Villa, Holy Rosary Hospital and Hospice and Stevenson and Sons.
Judy’s life touched many people, co-workers, friends and acquaintances, please know that she treasured and loved each one of you.
A local memorial service will be held in late spring. Cremation has taken place and she will be later interred next to her brother Mark at the family plot in Michigan.

Judy and I were childhood friends she had a sweet personality. We spent days in our youth laying in the sun in her yard watching the fluffy clouds in the sky and sharing what we thought they looked like. We have talked on the phone for years, though we were usually living in different states. I had chances different times in my travels to stop and visit. I will miss her terribly but I know she is at peace.
