Richard C. “Dick” Reed, age 83, of Miles City passed away after a year long fight with cancer on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at the Friendship Villa Care Center in Miles City surrounded by his family.
Dick was born on May 16, 1929 in Miles City, Montana, the son of Clifford and Edna (McMullin) Reed. He attended country school through the 8th grade at various country schools. He then went to work for area ranchers at the age of 14 to help provide for his family. He met Irene Dyba while working as a police officer when he pulled her over. They were married on December 4, 1949, in Glendive, Montana. Shortly after they were married, they rented a place at Sheffield before purchasing the ranch on Cap Rock Road in the 1960’s.
Ranching was Dick’s life. He loved animals, especially the spring babies. Breaking horses was another favorite pastime and he also was a sheep shearer when he lived at Sheffield. Dick enjoyed reading, everything from history to politics to fiction. He was very conservative in his politics and very vocal. He especially enjoyed spirited conversations with his sister.
Dick is survived by three sons: Rick (Kim) Reed of Helena, MT; Jay (Linda) Reed of Sidney, MT; and Curtis (Lori) Reed of Miles City, MT; a daughter. Wanda Reed of Miles City, MT; a brother, Rob (Syde) Askin of Casper, WY; a sister, Nancy (Gary) Charlton of Casper, WY; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene in 1999, a sister Jean and two brothers Lee and Jackie.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Wanda & Family,
Was so sorry to hear of Dick’s passing. When I learned that he was sick, my first impulse was to call him; but, then, I remembered that I had spoke to him on one of his birthdays by phone and he said that he couldn’t really couldn’t make out what I was saying because of ” these damn hearing aids and cell phones and that you guys had given him a couple drinks and he was half lit”!! 🙂 He was an original! I am so glad that I got to go through the Range Rider’s Museum with him and to hear all the stories he had to tell. If there’s a cowboy heaven (and I’m sure there must be), he’s up there with Dad raising hell right now. I always thought of him as “Uncle Dick” but, really he was a cousin. After your Mom passed away I would ask him if he had found love again and he would tell me “Nope, it’s too hard on the heart!”……I always liked that saying. Remember the lessons that they taught you and hold on tight to the good memories. My thoughts are with you; but, we have to believe that they’re all in a “better place” and that we’ll catch up with them later down the road.
Love,
Colleen

Wanda and family,
I am so sorry that you lost your dad. He was such a great man. I just loved it when he was at Beer Thirty at dad’s shop. He always could make me smile! Dad (Doug Nelson) told me he had a dream on Wednesday night that Dick had gotten out of bed and walked right out of the Villa. When we saw you at Stevenson’s on Thursday night and we found out that he had passed away, I looked at Dad and with tears in my eyes said, “Well it looks like your dream came true!” Love to all of you and I hope it’s a comfort that he is no longer in pain.
