Sergey “Sid” Mentikov passed away in his sleep on April 18, 2015, at Holy Rosary Extended Care, with his wife, Georgia nearby.
Sid was born December 19, 1927 on the family ranch at Powderville, the second child and only son of Vassily and Helen Mentikov. Along with his older sister Sonja, and younger sister Mary, Sid had many good times playing in the hills and attending the Powder River District 2 School “The Brown School.” He later boarded with his sisters, in Miles City, while attending Custer High School. During high school he worked at Lakin Seed Company and Balsam and DeFrance Trucking Company and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. At graduation, Sid opted to go back to the family ranch, despite being offered a scholarship to attend college.
In 1945, at a country dance at Riverview, Sid met a “Peach” from town, Georgia Fletcher. On September 1, 1949 they married and moved out to the family ranch on the Powder River, where they worked and raised their family. Seven children were born of this union: Sandra (Wayne) Shelton. Jeanie Mentikov (James Guyer), Susanne Galbraith, Merry (Armando) DeAnda, Michael, Mark (Juliet Lucas) and Paul.
Sid enjoyed reading about history, visiting with neighbors and telling a good joke. He was a wonderful story teller and recalled many stories about characters on the river. Family was very important to Sid and he enjoyed large family events, which usually ended up with a robust game of cards. Sid was a self taught musician and spent many evenings playing guitar and singing to his family. In his later years he cherished his grandchildren and made each of them feel special.
Although life was not always easy, Sid and Georgia found pleasure in each other’s company. He loved to take her out for a good dinner and dancing. They enjoyed special events around Miles City, such as the fair, the Range Rider’s Museum, looking at art at the Waterworks Gallery, the Farmer -Rancher Banquet and any other event that was taking place.
They were fortunate to travel together to Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Canada, Mexico and many places in the United States. They both loved the time they spent in Hawaii visiting the historic sites around Pearl Harbor. During his travels to Europe, Sid appreciated visiting the historic sites of the European Theater. Together, they visited Dachau, Flanders Field, and Hitler’s Eagles Nest He loved to share the stories of his travels with friends, family and later with his caregivers. The camera was the first item to go into his suitcase; Sid had an understanding of the settings and equipment, which he used to capture many interesting photos and memories.
Sid was a great husband to his wife and a Dad to his children. He always offered encouragement and advice to help his children achieve their goals. Sid was very well versed on many topics as a result of his continued thirst for knowledge, fulfilled by his constant reading. He was always willing to share this knowledge with his children to help them in their life goals or to make a conversation interesting. Sid always supported his children in the variety of school of events and was proud of each of them.
Sid leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Georgia. His children; Sandra (Wayne) Shelton. Jeanie (James Guyer), Susanne Galbraith, Merry (Armando) DeAnda, Michael, Mark (Juliet Lucas) and Paul. His grandchildren: Nicholas (Jennifer) Shelton and their children, Nicholas Wells and Hannah; Nathan (Tonyal) Shelton and their son Carter; Christopher and Danielle Guyer; Lindsay and Derick Frost; Holly and Kristine Mentikov; Lisa and Michael Mentikov, Nicole (Terry) DeAnda Van Cleve and their children Vivienne and Hudson. Sid is also survived by nieces and nephews, and a sister-in law Marcia (Lee) Rudolph. Sid also leaves behind many lifelong friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Vassily and Helen Mentikov, sisters; Sonja (Richard) Heller and Mary (John) Williams, in-laws; Lee and Helen Fletcher, and son in law; Joel Galbraith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a charitable donation to the Custer County Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
