Abner Glenn Farnum, age 91, of Miles City passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the Billings Health & Rehabilitation Community.
Abner was born in Miles City, Montana on August 9, 1918, the son of Glenn and Elizabeth (Bircher) Farnum. He was raised on Cottonwood Creek East of Miles City. He went to the Shirley School till two months in the seventh grade. They then moved to the Yellowstone Valley in 1930. He went to the Kircher School and to the Custer County High School. Following his schooling, he worked for his parents on the Farnum Dairy. He worked to build up his cow herd and bought some land. In 1941, Abner married Katherine Meixner. They bought Abners parents out in 1953 and built up a good working ranch. In 1970, they sold out and moved west of Forsyth. In 1972, they sold the property and bought a place west of Hathaway, Montana. They sold the Hathaway Ranch in 1998 and moved to town. Abner was on the school board, rural fire department in Custer County and was a 4-H leader for ten years. He also ran a fire truck in Rosebud County for ten years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City and the Eagles.
Abner is survived by two daughters: Marie (Karson) Kluver of Rosebud Creek, MT; and Isabell (Tim) Katzman of Burlington, WI; six grandchildren: Tanya Katzman, Tyler Katzman, Jan (Ryan) Banks, Ab (Sarah) Kluver, Kathleen Kluver and Freeman Kluver.
He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine in 2005.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 with family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery.
