Agatha "Baye" Schoonover, age 85, of Broadus passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the Saint Vincent Hospital in Billings.
Agatha "Baye" Schoonover was born at the family ranch on June 13, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Eathel (Hulford) Smith. She was one of the first children born in Powder River County. She attended the Sam Smith school through the 8th grade and 1 year at the Broadus High School. She and John "Jack" Schoonover were married July 14, 1939 and had 2 sons, Frank of Broadus, Montana and Nick of Berlin, Connecticut.Baye was a very hard working person and she loved to work beside her husband in the hay fields, cutting fence posts, in the coal mine or whatever the work was at the time. She was an excellent cook and cooked many meals for the people that came to get coal from the mine. She was famous for her angel food cakes that she started making when she had only a coal and wood stove to bake them in.Baye loved to visit with people and enjoyed going to the baseball games. She also traveled with the family when they were playing for dances. Most of us were asleep before we got home, but she was still going strong. She had a large assortment of crocheted work that she had done through the years and even was able to keep some of it in her cedar chest after having given all of the family some as well as her friends. She loved her dog, Sam, one of several that she had through the years, and he loved her, too. They always had pets that were part of their family.
Baye lived the most of her life in Powder River County with the exception of a few months they spent in Idaho. She and Jack made a trip to Connecticut to see their son, Nick and family and recently she flew to Windsor, California to visit her oldest grandson, John. She enjoyed doing this and had so much to tell us about her trip.
Baye is survived by her two sons, Frank and Nick, three grandsons, John of Windsor, CA and Frankie John and Billy Jack of Broadus, two granddaughters, Priscilla and Jacklynand one great-grandson, Seth of Broadus. One sister, Myrtle May of Biddle, one brother Giles Smith of Hamilton, MT, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death byher parents, husband, John, in October of 1989 ( after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in July), and two sisters, Mildred Steadman and Nell Popp.
