In Memory Of

Agnes K. Cremer, age 105, of Miles City, MT

February 12, 1920 – June 14, 2025

Agnes Katherine Hafla Cremer, age 105 years, four months and two days, has entered into her eternal reward, passing away peacefully on Saturday, June 14. She was born Feb 12, 1920 in the family home near Wasson Flats, Garfield County, the fifth child and third daughter of Anton and Agnes (Hanel) Hafla.
Raised on a small farm near what is now Cohagen, she completed her education at the Hafla school nearby. After eighth grade she remained on the farm to help her parents. At age 17 she won a 4-H Judging Contest and earned a trip with other young Montana 4-H’ers to Chicago to the National Convention. In 1939 she moved to Miles City and attended the Montana Business Institute. She also worked at the Holy Rosary Hospital and at the U.S. Gardens Restaurant. Her brother-in-law, Fred Dyba, set her up on a blind date which is how she met her future husband, Bob Cremer. On June 21, 1941, she married Robert (Bob) Charles Cremer at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7:30 in the morning. The officiant was Msgr. Thomas Hennessey. In 2014 they were recognized as Montana’s longest married couple. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in June 2016 and were married for a total of 79 years. In February of 2020 they both celebrated their 100th’ birthdays. Bob died in October of 2020.
The newlyweds were rabbit hunting on a Sunday morning in December when friends told them that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. Agnes followed Bob to Santa Anna, CA, after he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, and then to Albuquerque during his training. After he received his orders to go to the South Pacific, she returned to Miles City and lived with his parents, Charles and Emma Cremer. She attended Mass daily to pray for her husband’s safe return. During that time, she worked for the clothing store, Vaughn and Ragsdale, where the owner wanted to train her to be a buyer. But Agnes declined, knowing she and Bob had other plans. When Bob returned to the States they lived in Texas while Bob trained Chinese cadets. Upon his discharge from service in 1945, she quit her job to be a full-time wife and mother to their five children.
Agnes served on many school, church, and civic associations. She was a Brownie leader, officer of the Community Concert Association, member of the Altar Society and PTA and a strong supporter of Sacred Heart Catholic Parish and Sacred Heart Elementary and High Schools. She was always in the stands or audience with Bob cheering one or another of their active children, and then grandchildren. Agnes also enjoyed traveling with Bob to his business conventions and leisure time with family on cruises and reunions. She loved to dance, to bowl, and to garden. She was very proud of her flower garden, especially her roses, which she nurtured carefully.
Agnes is survived by her five children: Sheila (Ross) Walrath, Robert (Kären) Cremer, Chuck (Jeanette) Cremer, Craig (Dannette) Cremer and Marc (Mary) Cremer. They had fourteen grandchildren, Lara (Gus) Lazear, Lisa (Doug) Cullins, Scott (Jessica) Walrath, Christa (Rusty) Phalen, Jenny (Tim) Giles, Bobby (Brittany) Cremer, Kevin (Theresa) Cremer, Ryan (Holly) Cremer, Corey (Kelly) Cremer, Danielle (Edward) Dindinger, Jessica (Alex) Hartford, Joe (Asia) Cremer, Amy Cremer and Sarah Cremer, and 24 (and counting) great grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bob; her only son-in-law Bruce Ross Walrath; her siblings: Anna (Fred) Dyba, Mary Strom, Joe (Marie) Hafla, Anton (Lydia) Hafla, Rose (Casper) Schantz, Margie (Don) Davis, John (Jean), Hafla, Richard (Betty) Hafla, and Vince (Sylvia) Hafla.
The Cremer family extends special thanks to the members of the Hospice team at Intermountain Health/Holy Rosary for the care they showed our Mother in her final days to ensure her comfort and to support the family. Thank you to all the nurses, CNAs, nutrition, and support staff at the Residential Living facility who responded to every request and made our mother feel special. Thank you to Jackie Bremer and her staff for their assistance and friendship which enabled Mom to stay in her home. And thank you to Father Jolly and Sister Lissy whose visits brought Mom the reassurance of God‘s love.
Arrangements are being made with Stevenson’s and Sons Funeral Home. Family to Receive friends will be held on Monday, June 23rd from 4 – 6 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by the Rosary at 6 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 24th at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Eastern Montana State Veterans Cemetery. A reception will be in the Sacred Heart Parish Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miles City Sacred Heart School.

I sure am going to miss you! You have been my neighbor my entire life. Growing up with all the Cremer kids was amazing and I have so many great memories. You became my second Mom after my Mom passed away and we had so many wonderful conversations. I’m going to miss running across the street to visit and our phone calls discussing what’s going on in the neighborhood. You and Bob were wonderful neighbors and Gary and I enjoyed every minute with both of you. Say hi to my Mom and Dad when you see them. You all can have a great reunion on the front steps.

I was also struck when I noticed that Msgr. Hennessy wed them…yes,I remember him. When I started altar serving in 3rd grade I served my first masses with him. He kept doing his priestly duties until he passed. He was well-into his 90s.
