Albert J. Brown, age 95, ofMiles City and Powderville passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2006 at the Friendship Villa Care Center. He was the last old timer left in the Powderville area.
Albert was born Sept. 06, 1910 at the Abby Hospital to Joseph and Edna DeGuire Brown. He was taken home to the Brown Ranch at Powderville to be joined two years later by a little brother, Clarence L. When the time for school came he was taken to Powderville to board with a local family. There were many children in the school at that time and Albert enjoyed telling of the different extracurricular activities that took place with the students. He attended Custer County High School and following that resumed his ranch life at Powderville. On May 16, 1936, he married a country school teacher, Cora Scott McCoy. Cora and Albert worked very hard and built the ranch up together for 49 years. During many of these years there were no "indoor" plumbing, electricity, telephone service and very poor roads. Albert enjoyed hunting and went elk hunting in the Western part of the state for many years. He also enjoyed many fishing trips. Following Cora's death Albert continued his lifelong love of the ranch life and still worked outside until he was 85 and then had a big "tater" patch until he was 90 when he finally decided to move to town. Even then, although nearly blind, he had a garden and raked his leaves until he was 93. He moved into Friendship Villa at that time and displayed much strength of character to adjust to so many difficult things so late in his life. He would love to listen to the
Cowboys' sports events on the radio and when someone told him something funny he would still enjoy it and smile his special smile. Albert loved his family and had the wonderful experience of seeing three of his grandchildren grow up on the ranch and always liked hearing about the one's who were growing up elsewhere.
He is survived by his daughter, Jessie (Jim) Leidholt of Miles City and his sons, Harold (Ila) of Bozemen and Clarence (Ingrid) of Powderville and his grandchildren, Vickie (Oscar) Davidson, Eric Leidholt and Greg (Tanya) Leidholt, Bridget (Matt)Ekstrom, Brian (Shelby) Brown andKonnie (Troy) Shuey, Joe (Stacey) Brown and James Brown. He is also survived by great grandchildren Johan, Jakob and James Shuey, Todd and BreAnn Leidholt, Addison and Myles Ekstrom, Weston Brown and Houston and Logan Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cora, brother Clarence L. Brown, and an infant daughter Edna.
