Wilson “Albert” Newman, age 94, of Ingomar died on Thursday July 14, 2016 at Rosebud Healthcare Center in Forsyth. Albert was born on July 4, 1922 in Colville, Washington to Wallace A. and Sarah (Denny) Newman. When he was 2 weeks old, his family moved from Colville to Sarpy Creek by way of a covered wagon. It took them nearly 3 months to complete the journey. Albert attended school in Crow Agency until the 8th grade.
He worked on various ranches near Crow Agency, and in November of 1941, Albert joined the Army and served for nearly two years during World War II. Shortly after his discharge from the Army, he met the love of his life, Virginia Jean May, when he left his horses at her house to go to a rodeo. On December 15, 1943, he and Jean were married in Hardin, MT. To this union, 3 children were born: Marlene, Wally and Howard. Albert also took the mantle of father to his brother’s three children: Rodney, Dean, and Stanley, after his brother’s death.
After Albert and Jean were married, they began their life together at the May Homestead and Residence on Sarpy Creek. During their marriage, they lived on numerous ranches throughout eastern Montana, until 1963 when they moved to Ingomar and made their permanent home. Albert is a life-long cowboy, cattleman, family man, teamster, leader and mentor. He was a great producer of bucking horses throughout his life, and this was his biggest pleasure in life. In recent years, Albert really enjoyed using his hands to build all kinds of wagons.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Wallace and Sarah (Gip) Newman; his siblings: Thomas Newman, Sidney Newman, and Alice Bell White; one granddaughter, Gilean Ann Newman; Daughter-in-Law Marsha Newman; and a Granddaughter-in-Law Jackie Newman.
Albert is survived by his wife Jean; children: Marlene (Fred) Rule of Elk City, OK and her sons Justin Hawks and Toby Hawks; Wally Newman of Ingomar; and Howard (Johnna) Newman of Ingomar and their daughter Ashlee (Loyd) Ketchum; his nephews: Rodney (Christy Loose) Newman of Hobson and his 3 sons Sid (Brandy) Newman, Robert Newman, and TJ (Liane) Newman; Dean (Linda) Newman of Roundup and their 4 daughters Jona (Lige) Murray, Tara (Neil) Bradley, Maurie (Kelvin) Elness, and Jamie (Curtis) DeHaven; and Stanley (Bette) Newman of Hayward, CA and their 2 children: Ben (Tina) Newman and Skeeter (Terry) Ray; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
In Lieu of Flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Big Horn County Historical Society, 1163 3rd Street E, Hardin, MT 59034 or to the Tri-City Rec, PO Box 336, Ingomar, MT 59039.
Private Family Burial with Military Honors will be held in the Forsyth Cemetery. The public is invited to a Celebration of Albert’s life at 12 Noon on Wednesday July 20 at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth, MT. Have an old fancy top piece off a wood heater that Albert picked up and gave me when we were getting ready to corral cattle at Sumatra sometime in late 70s. (Was alot of junk scattered near the corral gate.) Both Albert and Jean were friends with my folks and am glad I got to know them when I lived at Sumatra.

I was blessed to get to know Albert and Jean as a young man in high school. I had the privledge of driving a four-up with him from Ingomar to Miles City and then stayed with them for several months. I was always impressed with his sense of humor and never tired of listening to his stories. He seemed to always find a good laugh in the most challenging situations and enjoyed a good joke. His definition of a “plum broke” horse was one you didn’t have to tie up a leg to get it saddled. I wished that I could have spent more time with him and Jean. Their picture would be the definition of “good people”. I am happy that I was able to stop in Forsythe and spend a few more moments with them both. He let all the kids park his electric chair and laughed the entire time. I was impressed in his ability to remember the details of our trip years ago and the look on my face when he had me drive the team over a damn I was sure we wouldn’t make it over.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Jean and the rest of his family.

I just don’t have the heart to tell my Dad that another great ole cowboy and friend has left us. I know he would want be there to celebrate his life. Maybe they’ll meet again taking the outside circle. Thinking of all the Newman’s, our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Jean and “kids”.
Clay & Karen Taylor & Family & Thomas Family says
Thoughts and Prayers go to ALL THE FAMILY. The Newman Family lived 9 miles north of the HOME-RANCH we LOST in June 2010 and they were NEIGHBORS to my Family when I grew up. I believe it was 1965 or so when they moved from Haxby to Ingomar and we had a huge picnic at my parents Ranch for them with all neighbors attending. This Family has ALWAYS been SPECIAL to our Family and we KNOW what it Feels like to lose a SPECIAL FAMILY MEMBER-BELIEVE ME!!!!! I wish life had not kept us all from being able to stay n touch a whole lot more cause they’ve ALWAYS meant a whole lot more than they will ever know to us. Love ALL of you so much. God Bless Ya’all.
Mike Archdale says
I know that Albert had a great number friends and was part of a great number of groups. The one group that was special to me was Lyle Pettus, Albert Newman, Frankie LaBree and my Dad Jimmy Archdale. My memory of Albert is eating an ice cream cone in the Jersey Lilly.
Bob and Sue Roods says
Our condolences to each of you. Albert was a gentleman and a friend. One of Bob’s fond memories was when Albert mounted him in the steer wrestling in Roundup at a High School Rodeo. I, too have some very special memories of Albert at High School rodeos. He will be missed and in our hearts forever. Bob and Sue Roods
Paul Cooper and Chris Arroliga says
To the Newman family I want to express my condolences. Albert was a true cowboy. He showed a New Jersey kid what hunting in Montana was all about. I remember rides in his pickup hunting mule deer and antelope. I loved his stories and his humor. Thank you all for great memories. Chris wanted me to pass along her condolences. She loved hunting prairie dogs with Albert. We will miss him dearly.

Had the privilge to know Albert, Jean, Wally and Howard. Last time I’ve seen them was back in 2001. Just had quit a job on a not so nice ranch in Montana. Learned a lot while being on the NNN. Stayed in touch with the Newmans over the last 25 years. Talked to Albert last, on his birthday, July 4th 2016. Learned about his passing today, when trying to wish him and Jean a Merry Christmas. Thank you Albert for being my friend. Was always proud of it. Thank you for letting me ride your horse ‘Tall Man’ after you couldn’t ride it anymore. Now I’m crippled by a horse myself, but it was not the horses fault..my own fault. I appreciate the time I spent with you, your old time Cowboy Logic, your sense of humor and your simple, ‘Down to Earth’ philosophy. I will miss you Albert…you are riding on some greener pastures now…hopefully I can join you one of these days. We will be back in the saddle again..
