December 9, 1928 – January 28, 2015

Alice May Bickel, 86 passed away in her home on January 28, 2015.   Alice was born December 9, 1928 in Brusett, MT the third child to Amos and Iva (Heiss) Spracklin.   Alice attended school in Garfield County.  After obtaining her high school diploma, she took bookkeeping classes.  She married Ferdinand H. Bickel on October 7, 1945.  Ferdinand and Alice farmed in the Rock Springs area for several years. In 1971, the couple purchased a farm/ranch operation near Mill Iron, MT.  Ferdinand and Alice had five children Trudy, Randy, Iva (Beth), Ferdinand Jr. (Jodi) and Amos.   Alice loved to garden, raising a huge supply of fruits and vegetables every year.  She never let anything go to waste; canning, cooking or baking everything she raised.  She also attended to farm animals and cooked for harvesting crews.   After retiring from farming, Alice worked at the Friendship Villa in Miles City and attended the Trinity Lutheran Church.  After Ferdinand passed away, Alice moved to North Dakota to live near her son Amos and his family.  Alice enjoyed gardening, puzzle books and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren there.  Alice returned to Montana in 2009, she lived in Miles City for two years, and then moved to the Central Court Village in Billings.  She made many friends and enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles, cryptograms, going to church at Mt Olive Lutheran Church and shopping.   Alice lived a long life with many joys and sorrows.  Her strength is her greatest legacy to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Mary Ann Spracklin, Margaret Lewis, Betty Cole, and Helen Fowler, her daughter Trudy MacLeod , son, Ferdinand Bickel, Jr.,and daughter in law, Jan Bickel. She is survived by her sisters Dorothy Tucker of Yuma, AZ and Bertha Roufley of Miles City, sons Randy (Deb) Bickel, Miles City, and Amos Bickel, Fargo, ND, daughter Iva (Beth) Smathers, Helena, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the charity of one’s choice.

Our thoughts and prayers are with during this time. Cherish the memories as they are forever. Be at peace knowing your mom and dad are back farming their many acres again together. I remember years back when the our family had to take the snowmobile and sled, with us kids, from our place up to your folks’ place to get to our outfit to get to school. Many a trips over the fields. Stay strong….
