Funeral Services for Alice Scott Bates, age 98, of Gillette will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2005 at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joel Wright of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and interment will follow the funeral service in Mt. Pisgah cemetery.
Alice died October 4, 2005 at Pioneer Manor of natural causes.
Mrs. Bates was born November 12, 1906 in Rancho, Texas the daughter of Scott and Mildred (Littleton) New. They lived in Texas and Oklahoma before moving to Gillette in March 1917 to homestead on Wild Horse Creek.
Alice attended school in Gillette and worked in various places.
She married George W. Bates on October 10, 1926 in Gillette. They had four boys and lived the next several years in Gillette and Sheridan. Alice worked as a cook in several cafes, including the Cozy Lunch, on the corner of main and 3rd where the bank is now. She also worked several years for Husky Truck Stop where Ford Garage is now. The family moved to Sheridan again in 1974 and milked cows, raised calves, chickens and a large garden each year. Alice did lots of canning, churning butter, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting. She lived in Sheridan for a year after George passed away and then she moved back to Gillette to the Squaw Valley Apartments in June 1990. In February 1999 she moved to Pioneer Manor.
Alice will be missed by her four sons; Don Bates and wife of Gillette, James Bates and wife of Hamilton, WA, Richard Bates and wife of Casper, WY and Scott Bates and wife of Lead, SD. Two sisters; Blanche Willard and Laverne Cook and husband of Gillette, one brother, Edward New and wife of Sun City, CA. Alice is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter, one grandson and one great-grandson.
