Interment: will follow in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City
Amanda Smith Harrsch, age 100, of Billings, Montana, formerly of Broadus, Montana, passed away on July 16, 2005 at Valley Health Care Center in Billings.
Amanda was born Feb. 12 1905 near Copemish, Michigan to Gustav and Hannah Deising Smith. The family came to MT in 1913, traveling by train to Gillette, Wyo. They stayed several days in Gillette while their father went with the mail carrier to the Cross Ranch in Powder River Co. MT. There he borrowed a team of horses and a wagon, returning to Gillette, and brought the family to the Cross Ranch where they lived several years. Amanda attended school in the Ranch Creek area where the family homesteaded. Their social life consisted of playing baseball, card playing and country dances. They often rode horseback to the dances, sometimes as far as 30 miles.
Amanda and Fred R. Harrsch were married Dec 2 1926. They ranched near Biddle MT on theHarrsch homestead, where they raised their family of 6 children. They always had a large garden and Amanda quite often canned as much as 1000 qts. of food stuff each year. The canning was all done on a coal and wood stove. They sold their land and moved to Broadus, in 1952. After Fred passed away in November of 59, Amanda moved to Billings to be near her children. She spent the last 15 years at Valley Health Care where she had time to enjoy her favorite hobbies, embroidery and crocheting. We want to thank all the people at Valley Health Care for their care and consideration for our Mother.
She is survived by 5 children, Edith Woods, Edna Bell, Marjorie Harrsch and WayneHarrsch all of Billings and Gerald (Shirley)Harrsch of Boise, Idaho.
