Anton Hafla, age 93, of Miles City passed away on Monday, July 11, 2011 at the Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City.
Anton was born on the Hafla Homestead at Cohagen, Montana on April 1, 1918, the son of Anton and Agnes (Hanel) Hafla. He grew up on the family ranch where he helped with daily chores while he attended grade school at the country school. On June 7, 1942, he married Lydia Erlenbusch at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Shortly after he was married he entered the Army on November 16, 1942. After his honorable discharge, he came to Miles City where he helped local veterinarians; this is where he gained his knowledge on how to treat animals. He continued to live on the family ranch where he raised cattle and horses and farmed wheat. He remained on the ranch until 2004 when he sold the ranch and moved to Miles City to be closer to his family. He remained in Miles City until the time of his death.
Anton enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family and friends. He helped star E.M.I. (Eastern Montana Industries) and was on the board.
Anton is survived by seven children: Marvin (Eleanor) Hafla of Miles City; Shirley (Benny) Svenson of Glendive, MT; Glenn Hafla of Miles City, MT; Dennis (Fritzie) Hafla of Miles City, MT; Glen (Nancy) Hafla of Glendive, MT; Sharon Hafla of Miles City, MT and Cheryl Smutt of Miles City, MT; two brothers: Joe Hafla and John Hafla both of Miles City, MT; two sisters: Agnes Cremer and Rose Schantz both of Miles City, MT; fifteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lydia in 2005; three sisters: Mary Strum, Marg Davis, and Anna Dyba and two brothers: Richard and Vince Hafla.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1579. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.
