Anton Dyba, age 101, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.

Anton was born on June 11, 1902 in Bochum, Germany, the son of Paul and Agnes Theil Dyba. They lived in Westleven, Germany until he was almost 7. He immigrated to the United States on the steamship Vaderland with his parents and five brothers (Mike, Walter, John, Paul, and Fred). They landed at Ellis Island in 1909. Brothers Valentine and Bill came over two years later. The family lived in Arenfield, Pennsylvania for several years where his father and the older brothers worked in the coal mines. While in Pennsylvania, the youngest brother Leo was born.

The parents and nine boys move to Montana and homesteaded five miles west of Hillside on Thompson Creek near Cohagen where they ranched. Anton started school in Germany where he went for 6 months then 1 years in Pennsylvania and the remainder in Montana at the Sacred Heart Convent School in Miles City. Anton met Palmera (Polly) Parenti at a dance in Cohagen and they were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City on June 25, 1927. To this union four children were born: Charles Morris, Pauline Louise, Caroline and Norma Jean.

They farmed near Cohagen during the depression, and experienced severe droughts, which forced them to give up farming and move to Cohagen where he delivered mail and worked for Garfield County as a maintainer operator. He worked for Pete Minkoff herding sheep and running his own sheep and lived in a sheep wagon during lambing season. In 1949, the family moved to Miles City where he continued to work for Pete on Becker Lane. In 1952, they moved to their home at 511 N. Cottage Grove and he went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad. He continued with the railroad until the shops closed. Before retiring, he worked for Miles City Livestock Center as a labor and Holy Rosary Hospital as a groundskeeper. He was a man of many talents and spent hours building and doing repair work in his garage. After his retirement he was a groundskeeper at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He and Polly enjoyed gardening and kept a beautiful lawn until he was 95, when his stroke forced him to stop. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan for many years. He was the oldest member of Sacred Heart Parish.

Anton is survived by his son, Charles Dyba of Miles City, MT; two daughters: Norma Tom and her husband Robert of Miles City, MT; and Pauline Deines and her husband Elmer of Glendive, MT; two brothers: William Dyba of Miles City, MT; and Fred Dyba of Billings, MT; five grandchildren: Bob, Jim, Rick, Steve, and Laurie; and twelve great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Polly of 72 years; a daughter, Caroline Dyba in 1940; six brothers: Michael, Walter, John, Valentine, Paul, and Leo; and a grandson, Mike Flotkoetter.
