Archie William Schroeber, age 75, of Fallon, MT passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Prairie Community Health Center in Terry.
Archie was born in Alfred, ND to Emil and Christine (Henne) Schroeber on November 29, 1929. He was their youngest child. At an early age, the family moved to Shepherd, MT where he attended school. As a young man, he worked on the family farm as well as for other area farmers. In the early 50s, he moved to the Zero area west of Terry to farm with his brother Reuben. After a few years of farming, he decided to go trucking for International Transport, driving from coast to coast. He loved farming and trucking but he also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with his friends and bowled for a period of time. He was also a founding member of the Prairie County Weed Board.
During this period of being in and around the Terry area, Archie met Dorothy Hinkle, a Terry schoolteacher, at a supper party. They were married a year-and-a-half later on June 25, 1960 in Billings, MT. They began their life together in Grass Range, Montana farming and ranching. They continued their farming and ranching life moving from Grass Range to Bridger and then to an area in Billings, which is now Oscars Park. While in Billings, Archie and Dorothy had their first child, a daughter Sheila Dawn whom Archie always called by her middle name. In 1967, Archie and Dorothy moved to an irrigated farm north of Fallon, MT. A few years later, Archie and Dorothy had another child, a son Gerald Lee. In 1996, Archie semi-retired but continued to help his son Gerald farm and ranch.
In the recent years of Archies life, he enjoyed checking cattle in the feedlot and doing other chores while driving his "Harley Davidson" golf cart. His seven grandchildren thought it was pretty great that their Grandpa Archie had this kind of "Harley".Friends and acquaintances driving down old highway 10, seeing the shop door open, would find Archie tinkering on something, watching a grandchild or two or three, and always ready to take time for a visit, which usually happened on a daily basis. His death came one month after being diagnosed with lung cancer. A few days before his hospitalization, he was doing what he enjoyed, swathing hay and helping Gerald and Trayton with baling.
Archie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy; daughter Sheila and Stuart McCalmont and their children Connor, Bailee, Keenan, and Kellen of Chinook, MT; son Gerald and Tristy Schroeber and their children Trayton, Trevin, and Genna of Glendive, MT; siblings Clara Skeen of Medford, OR; Reuben Schroeber of Miles City, MT; and Lorraine Jerke of Miles City, MT. Archie was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Tevin Schreober, and brothers Ernest and Kermit (Happy) Schroeber.
