Arnold K. Anderson, formerly of Terry, MT, passed away suddenly with his daughter and grandson by his side on the morning of June 13th, 2020, at Holy Rosary Healthcare hospital in Miles City. Born May 25th, 1935, in Joliet, MT, Arnold was the last of six children born to Norwegian immigrants Alfred and Anna (Kjørås) Anderson. In childhood, Arnold’s first language was Norwegian, which was commonly spoken alongside English on the Anderson family farm between Joliet & Columbus. Arnold graduated from Joliet H.S. in 1953 & later joined the Army in 1958. He was stationed in Kaiserslautern, West Germany, as a welder & company mail clerk until his honorable discharge in 1962. In Dec 1963, Arnold married the love of his life, Mary Lou Butler.
In the spring of 1964, Arnold & Mary Lou made their home in Columbus, where later that year, they welcomed their first daughter, Christine. In September of 1965, they moved to Bozeman so Arnold could pursue a degree in Range Management at MSU. In March of 1967, their son Craig arrived. Upon Arnold’s graduation in 1969 they moved to Wyola, MT on the Little Big Horn Ranch where Arnold worked as a farm foreman. In March of 1970, Arnold & Mary Lou welcomed their 3rd child, Lynn. Between the summer of 1970 & through the summer of 1981 they lived in Absarokee & Columbus. During those years, Arnold worked as a ranch foreman, an Ag Loan Officer, a salesman for a farm implement dealer, & a salesman for a livestock feed company.
In 1981 he and his wife moved the family from Columbus to Terry, MT where over the years he worked at Falkenstern’s Implement, the Hinebauch Ranch, and the Jens Ranch. He was also a part-time custodian at the local post office. Arnold retired in 2005. One of Arnold’s greatest moments in life, was the birth of his grandson, Jared in 1989. They spent many special times together fishing, hunting and camping. Grandpa & grandma were everything to their grandson. Grandpa was always there to be a consistent positive role model to his grandson as the only father-figure in his life. Jared will always remember the fond childhood memories of time spent in Terry in their simple cozy home as some of the happiest of his life.
Arnold’s family will always remember him as a true gentle giant, who in his prime stood 6’3” in size 14 shoes, with massive hands & an even bigger heart. He was such a kind man who always had a smile & time for conversation with any stranger who needed a friend in the moment. He loved to read the funny papers and had a great loud shaking “belly laugh”. Both he & Mary Lou loved spending time with their earthly family, but longed to see the face of Jesus.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, & his beloved wife in 2014. He is survived by all three children, Christine of Memphis, TN, Craig (Roxanne) CDR, USN (RET.) of Marina, CA, & Lynn of Miles City. He is also survived by his only grandchild, Jared Boles, also of Miles City.
