Arthur Cornelius Olson, 87, went to his heavenly home on October 15, 2013. He was at his home in Miles City, surrounded in love by his family.
Art was born April 12, 1926 at his grandmothers in Little Falls, MN. He grew up on the family ranch northwest of the Killdeer Mountains in North Dakota.
He spent over eight years serving our country. First, during the Second World War, in the Philippines and Japan, and then in the Korean War, where he received two Purple Hearts.
Upon discharge, he returned to the family ranch with his parents and brother.
He was active in his community, serving on the Council of the First Lutheran Church, Dunn County Rural Fire Department Board of Directors, as a radiologist monitor, on the Board of Directors of Tarentaise of North Dakota, and the American Tarentaise Association. He served as President of the American Tarentaise Association for three years and was named Tarentaise Man of the Year in 1979. He was later named to the Tarentaise Hall of Fame. He was on the screening committee at the Denver Stock Show.
He imported a bull from France, by way of Japan, and embryos from England. He artificially inseminated cows and heifers, did pregnancy checking, and cesareans for himself and his neighbors.
On June 11, 1966 he married Sophie Olson and they raised three sons and one daughter. Starting in the fall of 1980 they spent a year at Pray, MT while they traveled all over the United States looking for a new ranch. When they saw the size of the local deer, they knew they had found country that was good for cattle. They moved south of Miles City, on the Tongue River, which was half way back to where they started and ranched there for eleven years.
Then Art and Sophie built and operated a gift and antique shop south of Rapid City for a number of years. He built a 20 ton jackalope in front of the business. He used a wheelbarrow full of cement, one at a time. Mounted jackalope was one of his best sellers.
Most recently, Art owned and operated an antique store named Arts Antiques in Miles City with his wife Sophie, until the time of his death.
Art is survived by his wife Sophie Ann; son Brian and his significant other Melody DeMint of Miles City and his children Brooke (Jeremy Pyle) and Brittnee; son Wade (T.J.) of Miles City and their children Dannon and Traven; daughter Leann (Shelby) Sowers of Billings and their children Craig and Blake; son Lyle (Linda) of Denver, Colorado and their children Ashleigh and Gemma. Art is also survived by one great grandchild Danika Pyle; sister in law Sheryle Olson; his nieces and nephews: Claudia, Wayne, Ward, Bernie, Denise, Marlease, Dean and Carmella. Art was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth, sister Viola (Ira) Wing and nephew Kent.

Dear Sophie and family,
Saddened to hear of Art’s passing. He was a good man who always did his best at whatever the task was. We had good times in the Tarentaise breed and shared many a story. Read Art’s book and found it to be very interesting. You are in my thoughts and prayers as I am sure many in the ATA do too. God bless–Gary

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Arthur Cornelius Olson – I am sorry to hear of your loss. May you find comfort in many beautiful memories of Mr. Olson at this difficult time. The Bible gives us hope that soon the Creator will end all suffering, pain, and death. (Revelation 21:4) Also we have the hope of being with our loved ones when they are resurrected (John 5:28-29). The promise of Paradise, the perfect conditions God intended for mankind will be fulfilled (Ps. 37:11) including God’s “will being done as in Heaven also up on Earth “ (Matt 6:9, 10). We have the opportunity to be further comforted by promises in the Bible. (John 17:3).

We are sorry for your loss but the memories of knowing Art are still with me. I always enjoyed the hospitality at the ranch at Killdeer for all the sales and visits. It was a pleasure to work with Art on Tarentaise projects and shows. He will be missed by the Tarentaise family but all will have our thoughts and best wishes with you at this time. May God be of comfort at this trying time.

Did not know Mr. Olson had passed away prior to drafting a letter to him. Did not intend to offend anyone, but just express my thoughts about the cow business and another subject or two. My best wishes to the family.
