Ataloa “Addie” Hogan Harris
Indian Name, Little Song Ishuuia Kaate
Ataloa “Addie” Hogan Harris entered this earth on April 22nd, 1930 in Sheridan, Wyoming. She was born to George Hogan, Sr. and Marjorie WhiteHip. Marjorie passed when she was 9 months old. She then was raised by her aunt/mom Lizzie Yellowtail who took her as her own. She certainly was not bound to live a life filled with time to herself as she was one of 18 brothers and sisters. Addie was fortunate to be a member of the Whistling Water Clan and Ree Society. Addie graduated from Lodge Grass High School in 1949. She later married Francis “Gus” Harris (the man who would never leave her side), on September 12, 1952. Addie celebrated the Lord as a member of the First Indian Baptist Church in Lodge Grass Montana. She set the educational bar for her family when she graduated from Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, and became a Registered Nurse. Addie was a nurse for 51 years in profession; although figuratively speaking, she spent her life nursing the spirits of those who were fortunate to know her.
Her remarkable nursing career began as a school nurse at the Head Start center in Crow Agency. Addie and Josephine Russell were instrumental in getting dental care at the Crow Agency Head Start Center with Sheridan College. She also worked as a surgical nurse with Deaconess and St. Vincent’s Hospital; Registered Nurse at the Hardin and Crow Hospital; Director of Nurses at the Northern Cheyenne Health Center in Lame Deer, Montana. In 2005, Addie retired at the Lame Deer Public School. Throughout her nursing career, Addie traveled throughout the reservation as a school nurse. She loved to care for and loved children, always giving of her time and listening to their stories; they, in return, loved to share their stories with her. “She was the best nurse ever because she let us take naps,” said one student.
Addie believed in the power of prayer and salvation. She never tired of sharing her love for the Lord, especially those battling alcohol and drug addictions. Addie was an angel and a sweetheart. She loved her 5 children, 2 adopted son, and 2 children she raised, 17 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. They were number one in her life, attending birthday celebrations, naming ceremonies, giveaways and graduations. It was important to her that her grandchildren had traditional outfits; she worked tirelessly making beautiful buckskin and elk tooth dresses, beaded vests, leggings and moccasins. She had a dream in using the colors revealed to her for her signature design work. Addie was honored to name five of her grandchildren, she was given five Indian names to use. In her spare time, Addie loved to read about the Crow history and shared her stories; she was in the process of writing a book; but there is no greater story she could’ve authored than the one of her family. It’s certainly a story that will live on for many generations to come.
We will forever miss you, mom-grandma! We thank you for sharing all of your love. There was no greater teacher or exhibitor of love than Ataloa. She leaves a legacy of how a woman is supposed to love her husband; of how a mother is instructed to love her children; of how a grandmother seeds unconditional love in her grandchildren.
Addie is preceded in death by her parents, George Hogan, Sr., Marjorie Whitehip Hogan and Lizzie Yellowtail. Brothers: George Hogan, Jr., Adam Birdinground; Sisters: Edna Birdinground Ethridge, Cerise Hogan Stewart, Pearl Hogan PlentyHoops, Alma Hogan Snell, Mayme Hogan Knowshisgun, and Francis Hogan Knowshisgun
Addie is survived by her husband of 60 years Gus Harris, Lame Deer; sisters Ferole (Bill) Pease of Benteen, Mt., Mary Elizabeth (Nelson) Hogan Wallace of Hardin, Mt., Mardelle (Leo Porky) Hogan PlainFeather of Billings, Mt. and Diane (Dave) Reynolds of Threeforks, Mt, and her five children: Kathy Harris of Lame Deer; Lynn (Roberta) Harris of Colstrip; Lori OneBear of Lame Deer; Ryne (Barbara) Harris of Lame Deer; Joey (Vicki) Harris of Oklahoma City, OK; two adopted sons: Joe (Charlene) Alden of Lame Deer, Donnie Bill (Jackie) Pease of Wyola, Mt. and helped raised two children: Pam Harris of Billings and Shane Harris of Billings, Mt. Her grandchildren include Kassi (Josh) Elkshoulder-Stewart of Billings; Tara Elkshoulder of Oklahoma City, OK; Nolan Elkshoulder, Derek and Seth Sansavere of Lame Deer; Aaron Harris of Colstrip; Rhiannon (Alan) Bowman of Billings; Michael Harris of Colstrip; Tenaya (Kenny)Bigback of Lame Deer; Tempe (Roger)HisBadHorse of Lame Deer; Kristi (Merrill) KillsNight of Lame Deer; Rhea (Keith) Fox of Ft. Drum, NY; Coty(Taylor) Real Bird of Lame Deer; Kurri Harris of Lame Deer; Bryne Harris of Oklahoma City, OK.; and 20 great grandchildren. Extended families are the Hogan’s, White Hips, and the Yellowtails and other extended families too numerous to name. Addie was never short of family, there are people who shared moments with her that are nothing short of special, please forgive us if we did not mention you, Addie touched many hearts. She touched countless lives.
Special thanks to the Rosebud Health Care Center, Nursing Home and Miles City nurses.

My condolences for your loss of Ms. Harris.
2 Cor. 1:3 says: ” Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation”. If we draw close to God in prayer, he promises to comfort/sustain us.
Many find hope in the resurrection (John 5:28,29). We can look forward to seeing our dead loved ones again, including Ms. Harris. Having been a nurse, I’m sure she will be taking care of others in the ‘new world’ (2 Pet. 3:13).
I hope theses scriptural thoughts bring you comfort and hope.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ataloa Harris. May you find comfort in your happy memories and in remembering the fine qualities you recall of Mrs. Harris. Please know that God promises to be, “near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalm 34; 18) Our loving Creator has promised to soon “swallow up death forever…and wipe the tears from all faces.” (Isaiah 25; 8) Please look forward to the joy of again seeing Ataloa Harris in perfect health in Paradise conditions which were initially promised in regard to the Earth (Genesis 1:31). Faith in these promises will hopefully ease the pain of loss. Meanwhile we have the opportunity to follow Jesus’ instruction to continue to take in Bible knowledge that leads to everlasting life (John 17:3). and be further comforted by many beautiful promises.

Ataloa was such a special woman, a great role model for young Crow girls aspiring to go to college, have a family & a career and remaining active in church – singing her favorite Baptist hymns, organizing the famous First Crow Indian Baptist Christmas pageant and recruiting Gus to serve as the narrator, bringing all her little family to all the church events and sharing testimony for her love of God. She did it all and always with a smile and a kind word for others.Condolences to the family for the loss of their very special matriarch.
