The Matriarch of our family, Beatrice Seminole Small, age 89, of Lame Deer, was lifted by her guardian angels and met by love of her life Thomas “Tuck” Small on January 24th, 2018. She was surrounded by family at home at the time of her death.
Beatrice’s Cheyenne name is Oestone’e (Sacrifice Woman). Beatrice, a 4th generation descendent of the Northern Cheyenne Chief Morning Star (Dull Knife) was born on August 26, 1928 at home. Parents are Dan Seminole and Jennie Black Horse Seminole. Beatrice grew up on the Black Horse homestead up Lame Deer Creek and attended Lame Deer School.
She met her love “Tuck” after he returned from the service in 1945 and later married in March 1948. To this union of 64 years, they had five children: Fred (Myrna), Linda, Vernon (Theresa), Jeanette and Dean; grandchildren: Gene, Mellanie, Justin, Colt, Dutch, Robert, Kayla, Clint, Tiffany, Eli, Blaine, Cheyenne, Elijah, Sissy and Taylor; 24 great grandchildren and the first great-great grandchild she was anxiously awaiting.
She was a member of the Catholic Church and the Northern Cheyenne Chief’s family. Beatrice was a firm believer of the Northern Cheyenne traditional and ceremonial ways of life. She enjoyed beading, making traditional Cheyenne outfits and shawls as well as traditional dancing. However, her family was always the foremost on her mind and loved being a homemaker on the ranch.
Beatrice was preceded in death by husband Thomas Small; parents, Dan and Jennie Seminole; siblings: Annie Brady, Margaret (Josie) Sooktis, Eva Gass and Hubert Seminole.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, numerous members of the Seminole, Black Horse, Brady, Sooktis, and Small families.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Rosebud Health Care Center Nursing Home in Forsyth for all of their help in caring for our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend as well as other family and friends for their help and support during this difficult time.

I am sad to hear about Beatrice, she was a sweet lady. I wish I had visited more with her as I didn’t realize she was a child of Dan & Jennie’s. They were neighbors when they lived on a neighboring farm in the Carterville area. I remember some of the Seminole grandkids, Esther Red Eagle, & John Whistling Elk & others. Just lost track in the process of growing up. My condolences for Beatrice’s family, she is at rest now. I have a lot of happy memories of her playing Bingo!
