Bernard Bernie Sand, age 72 of Miles City, Montana, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Bernie was born on July 19, 1936 in Buckman, Minnesota, the son Anthony and Dorthea (Strack) Sand. At an early age the family moved to Kalispell, Montana where he attended schools and graduated from high school in 1954. After high school, Bernie spent a short time in the US Army. After his honorable discharge, he moved to Malta, Montana where he began working as a salesman for Valley Motor Supply Company. Bernie married Myrna Lake in Malta in 1960. He transferred to Baker, Montana for a short time before moving to Miles City where he retired from Valley Motor Supply in 1970. Bernie then began working forGierke Distributing as salesman and retired from there after twenty years of service. He remained busy in his retirement and helped out at the Miles City Greenhouse for Jim and Jane Dighans who became very special friends to him.
Bernie loved being on and around the river where he would spend hours hunting for agates, walking with his dog and fishing. He was a past member of the Elks, Eagles and Jaycees.
Bernie is survived by his son, Mike Sand (Kristi) of Rapid City, SD, his daughter,Sharla (Paul) Helland of Miles City, seven grandchildren; Jason, Aaron, Kara Helland, Tony and Mitchell Sand, MeghynWishard and Ashley Johnson, three brothers; Jerome Sand (Nadine) of Kalispell, MT, Robert Sand of Kalispell, MT and Fred Sand (Lenni) Marion, MT, three sisters; Claudia Blumer (Harold) of Kalispell, MT, Marilyn Jensen (Larry) of Whitefish, MT, and Shirley Lindgren (Gene) of Burth, OR, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by a daughter, Paula Sand Harris in 1992.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City.
