Funeral service for Bernice H. (Jahnke) Gardner of Gillette, Wyoming will be at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2005 at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette, Wyoming with Pastor Sonja Brucklacher of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and Chaplain of Hospice of Campbell County of Gillette, Wyoming officiating. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service on Monday. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Bernice Hannah (Jahnke) Gardner, age 95, died on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette, Wyoming.
Bernice H. (Jahnke) Gardner was born on March 4, 1910 in Beresford, South Dakota the daughter of Fred and Ethal (Bartlett) Sargent. She was raised and educated in South Dakota and then attended college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish South Dakota. Bernice taught in one room school houses in the Neeley School District, Elk Creek and eastern South Dakota. She then taught in the Rapid City School system for most of her teaching career which totaled 30 years. Bernice married Walter Jahnke in 1934 and shared in raising their two children, Gary and Donna. Walter passed away in 1977. In 1979, she married Merril Gardner who was a life long friend. In Rapid Valley, Bernice and Walter raised gardens and sold produce to various stores and individuals. Bernice enjoyed canning, cooking and crocheting. She liked to travel and see the country. She was also interested in weather watching and the different types of clouds and the storms that came with them. Bernice enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching as well. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star and the South Dakota Retired Teacher Association all while living in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Bernice is survived by her son, Gary (Marilyn) Jahnke of Gillette, Wyoming; daughter, Donna (Charles) Keen of Boyd, Texas; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both of her husband's, parents and sister.
