Bertha Valentine Yellow Fox OtherBull. “Otseveoo’e” Stands on Purpose Woman.
Our grandma was born on February 14, 1942 to Sarah Weasel Bear and Charles YellowFox, Sr. A prayerful woman of faith, she lived her life dedicated to prayer and tradition. On June 27th, she was called home to the milky way and stars to join her family and best friend, her late husband- Morton “Rick” OtherBull, Sr.
Our grandma was a prominent and proud woman of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. A fluent speaker and holder of knowledge, she walked through the world with fierce tenacity, passion and vision. Her early years were spent in Lame Deer on the YellowFox lands. She loved her people, her community and she loved attending powwows. She was always at powwows standing behind the drums, singing and recording songs on a little handheld recorder. Her roadtrips were always full of recorded tapes of powwow, prayer and NAC songs. You could find her traveling weekly- they were never home. But when home, their home was their haven and our grandma loved cooking big Sunday brunches for our grandpa and all of us- her grandchildren.
She was a traveler. A lover of the road. A prayerful woman. Our grandma traveled to over 40 states with her best friend, our grandpa… married for 62 years, their goal was to see all 50 states one day. In her early years, her and our grandpa were youth pastors and traveled together everywhere.. She enjoyed going to the hot springs in Wyoming and attending camp and revivals. She adored her grandchildren and always traveled to see them.
Our grandma dedicated 37 years to the Lame Deer School District Board. A fierce advocate for education and the youth. She spearheaded the first Head Start program and center in Lame Deer. She was passionate about education and Cheyenne children. She spoke on language and advocated for language revitalization.
In her quiet time, she enjoyed beading, puzzles and Soduko. She loved watching her grandchildren dance at powwow.
Bertha is proceeded in death by her late husband, Rick OtherBull. Her children, Mortalynn and Alice OtherBull Osceola. Her grandchildren Jolynn, Jacob, Martika, and Sarah OtherBull. Her parents Sarah and Charles YellowFox, Sr. Her brother Charles YellowFox, Jr. And her great grandchild, Alexandria OtherBull.
Bertha is survived by her children, J.R, Vernon (and the late Opalita) and Marty, and her esteemed grandchildren Deleana, Shalena, Alonzo, Delcey, Isaiah, Alliana, Patrick, Suzy, Emmanuel and Ethan. Her great grandchildren Haidyn Larae, Hunter Jr, Zayonna Valentine, Rylan Darrell, Olive Ophelia, Ezekiel Alonzo Jr, Jacoby Atlas, Nadonis Taye, Leila, Kyrie and Atreyo.
She leaves behind many relatives, her powwow and bingo family, and her dear friends.
Our family is large and we apologize if we missed anyone.
