Betty Lou Hanson passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, MT. Betty was born January 31, 1923 in Baker, MT to Alick and Mabel (Geving) Beckman. Betty spent her childhood and school years in Baker. In 1940, Betty moved with her family to Kinsey, MT.
On the farm adjoining her family farm in Kinsey, Betty met the love of her life, Benard Wendell Hanson. The couple married on April 5, 1942, taking over Ben’s family farm in Kinsey, MT. Their first daughter, Diane, was born in 1943. In 1947, after Ben’s time in Guam with the US Navy during WWII, the couple’s son, Keith was born. In 1950, the family moved to the Buffalo Rapids Irrigation Project outside of Terry, MT. They grew sugar beets, field corn and alfalfa and had a cattle feed lot. Their second daughter, Cora Sue, was born in 1955.
In 1975, with the family raised and on their own, Ben and Betty moved to Miles City where Ben worked for the Custer County Water & Sewer District, while Betty worked part-time at Joylin’s clothing store.
Finally, in 1985, both Ben and Betty settled into retirement. This left more time for “coffee” with friends and family, gardening, camping and fishing. Additionally, Ben and Betty traveled extensively. As members of Good Sam, they enjoyed touring and entertaining in their assorted motor homes.
Ben and Betty moved to Sweetwater Retirement Community in Billings in 2011. In April of 2012, they celebrated their 70th anniversary. Ben passed away on October 22, 2012. Though Betty missed Ben dearly, she continued to stay active at Sweetwater with Bingo, Bunko, Sunday Ice Cream Socials, frequent movie nights, Friday Happy Hour and dancing. She also spent time with family for weekly dinners and holidays.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, her parents and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her brother, Wayne (Charlotte), daughter Diane (Ron Joslyn), son Keith (Pam), daughter Cora Sue (Gordon Brannon); grandchildren: Tanna, Scott, Kevin, Tim, Justin, Davin and Sean; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Sweetwater Retirement Community and St. Vincent Healthcare, especially Mary P. on the 6th floor, for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time.
