Betty Rogers Fisher, “Day Woman” (Eseeva’e) and “Killsback Woman” (Evana hane’e),
was born on September 23, 1944, in Birney, Montana, to John Fisher and Mary Playing
Bear. She passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving
children and grandchildren.
Betty’s education began at St. Labre Indian Mission School in Ashland, Montana. She
continued her studies in Lawrence, Kansas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, later
earning her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Eastern Montana College in Billings.
Education was always close to her heart, and she encouraged her children and relatives
to pursue higher learning and obtain their degrees.
In 1962, Betty married Clarence Leroy Rogers, with whom she had three children: Kim,
Lee Ann, and Waylon Rogers. Together, they also adopted and raised Arlene Fisher
Rogers in 1966. After Clarence’s passing in 1976, Betty later married Jeff Carrell and
welcomed a son, Steven Manuel Carrell.
Betty lived a life of service and compassion. She worked as a social worker, a foster
parent, and is most well known for working at the Northern Cheyenne Recovery Center,
where she helped many people over 15 years. Her career also included working forSt.
Labre School, and most recently, she served at the front desk for the President of the
Northern Cheyenne Tribe. She opened her home and her heart to countless children,
raising Michelle Eaglefeathers, the Whiteman brothers (Michael, Mark, and Eugene),
and many others.
She was also known for bringing people together. In the late 1970s and early 1980s,
Betty organized teenage dances in Lame Deer at the Social Room, creating cherished
memories for the community. She loved bowling, was a dedicated member of several
leagues, and proudly bowled a perfect score in an all-Indian bowling tournament in
Billings with her dear friend Nan Whiteman.
Outside of work, Betty enjoyed life to its fullest. She loved attending powwows, visiting
with friends, and cheering at basketball games. She had a special bond with her
animals, all of whom she lovingly gave Cheyenne names. Her kindness, warmth, and
laughter followed her wherever she went, making everyone feel like family.
Betty treasured her many friendships, including those with Bonnie Pipe, Mina Seminole,
Lizona Harris, Delpha Harris, Mary Ann Mason, and Faye Ellen. Special lifelong friends
Jack and Ethel Haller, along with their granddaughter Michelle (Shelly) Fisher, became
extended family to her.
Betty was a descendant of a Head Chief who fought beside Yellow Mule, remembered
as the last Cheyenne warrior to charge and fall to the U.S. Cavalry. She was also
descended from Black Kettle, the revered peace chief. Her family’s lineage reaches
back to Star Path Woman, whose story ties our family to the mythological and
cosmological history of the Devil’s Tower and the “Big Dipper”.
Betty is survived by her children Arlene Fisher and Waylon Rogers; grandchildren
Monique (Sheena), Danielle Shotgunn, Shireesa Bryant, Jessica Rogers, Cruz
Glenmore, Alisha (Kenzie), Shantecca Rogers (Joseph), Macayla Rogers, Jordan
Washee, Kaelin Killsnight, Victor Killsnight, Justin Rogers Carrell, Clark Rogers, Kaya
Rogers, Christian Middlerider, and Ailani Kalea King Rogers.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Clarence Rogers and Jeff Carrell; her
children Kim Rogers, Lee Ann Rogers, and Steven Carrell; her grandchildren Shane
Shotgunn and Roseann Fisher; her parents John Fisher and Mary Playing Bear; her
siblings Rose M. Fisher, Burton Sr., George, and Dudley Fisher; and her niece Colleen
Fisher and nephew Emery Fisher. We apologize to anyone we left out.
Thank you to everyone who helped us during this hard time.
Betty will be remembered for her generosity, her devotion to family and community, her
love of powwows and gatherings, and her unwavering belief in the power of education.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and care that will live on through all
those whose lives she touched.
