In Memory Of

Bland V. Lunde, age 95 of Glendive.

October 19, 1926 – September 4, 2022

Bland V. Lunde, age 95 of Glendive, passed away on September 4, 2022, at the Eastern Montana Veteran’s Home in Glendive.

Bland was born October 19, 1926 in Glendive, MT to parents Hans and Bertha (Englestad) Lunde. The middle of three boys, he was raised on the family farm/ranch with brothers Harold and Gordon.  He loved animals, especially horses. He graduated from Dawson County High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17. He attended advance training for fleet oil tanker service at Treasure Island, California, and served aboard the newly commissioned, state of the art, USS Tamalpais A096, in the South Pacific and Asiatic campaign until wars’ end. The Tamalpais was the first Navy tanker to enter Tokyo Bay and was anchored starboard from the USS Missouri where he was able to witness the surrender of the Japanese. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and was very proud of his country and military service.

Bland returned home to help on the ranch and received his associate of arts degree from Dawson County Junior College in 1949. Bland was united in marriage to Calda Marie Starr on April 29, 1951. He loved music and dancing and played guitar in the Hodges Kow-Boys Band that played for dances all over the region. He and Calda were beautiful dancers. Bland was very interested in airplanes, especially military planes. Bland obtained his private pilot’s license in 1951 on the GI Bill. He and Calda were the proud parents of three boys, Ken, Bob, and Mark. He coached the boys in Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. Bland worked for Urbanec Motors and then for Shell Oil company for 28 years and retired as the operations foreman in Sidney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both his brothers, his beloved wife of 64 years, Calda, and his son Mark.

Survivors include his sons Ken (Tammy) of Glendive and Bob (Lynn) of Miles City; his grandchildren: Jason (Julie), Lance (Caitlin), Levi (Rielynn) Markala (Chris) Jenny and Mimi; five great grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at the Dawson Memorial Cemetery in Glendive. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, 401 Riverview Ave, Glendive, MT 59330.
