Carol Hopkins Mahoney, age 78, of Broadus passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2004 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Carol was born in 1925 in Powder River County, one of six children born to Chester and Golda (Baker) Hopkins. Carol and her brothers and sisters: Miriam, Hubert, Larry, Norman, and Lila were all born on the family homestead. Carol attended elementary school at Sand Creek and Broadus. She attended Miles Community College and Black Hills Teachers College.
Carol married Donald (Gabe) Mahoney on December 25, 1942. In 1943, while Gabe served in the Navy, Carol moved to California to live with her parents and work in the shipyards. In 1946, their daughter Connie Jo was born. When Connie was a few months old, the family moved back to the Mahoney family ranch in Powder River County. A son, Gerald Allen (Gerry) was born in 1951. The family spent the next 20+ years on the ranch. After the kids had both graduated from high school, Carol and Gabe divorced and Carol moved to Broadus. Carol operated the Cool Retreat Drive-in in Broadus, then later decided to go to college. She received her Batchelor of Science Degree in Teaching and taught in several rural schools in Powder River and Custer Counties including: Camps Pass, Cross S, Horkan Creek and Bear Creek Schools. After her retirement, she continued to live in her home in Broadus until she came to live at the Powder River Manor.
Carol loved her yard and garden and also helped with ranch work. Carol also loved poetry and taught her children an appreciation for reading and poetry.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Connie Ozment of Chugiak, AK; three brothers: Hubert Hopkins of Broadus, MT; and Larry Hopkins and Norm Hopkins both of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Gerry Mahoney, and two sisters: Lila Moore and Miriam Eldenborg.
