On August 28, 2023 Carol Evelyn (Brubaker) Larsen died peacefully at Rosetta Assisted Living in Missoula, MT joining her husband Gary in heaven. Carol was 85 years old.
Carol was the first child born to Harold and Jessie (Miller) Brubaker at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings, MT on February 11, 1938. They later moved to Cleveland, Ohio and around 1945 moved back to Billings then on to Williston, ND. While living in Williston, Carol spent a lot of time swimming, baton twirling, roller skating, and playing piccolo in the band.
The summer of 1952 the family moved to Terry, MT. Carol was in high school and participated in cheerleading, taught baton twirling, and acted in several plays. She worked at the State Bank of Terry (owned by the Brubaker family) as a clerk, along with being a soda jerk at the local drug store.
After graduating in 1956, she met the love of her life, Gary Hamlin Larsen and their first date was at the Brockway Dairy Days that summer. In the fall of 1956, she went on to attend college in Billings, MT where she was studying to become a teacher. At Christmas that same year, Gary proposed, and they were married on June 16, 1957. Daughters, Del Linda and Lorna along with sons, David and Lorin joined the family and made it complete.
When first married they lived and worked at the Fluss Ranch and enjoyed many hours of fellowship with the Lee’s, Young’s, Kalfell’s, and Fluss’. They later purchased and moved to the Larsen Ranch in August of 1959, later discovering it was the homestead of Evelyn Cameron. Carol spent many years raising children, working on their ranch, and dispatching for the Prairie County Sheriff’s office. When her children were in high school, she went back to work at the L&M drive-in, then to the Coast to Coast for a few short months. She went on to work at Reyman Hardware for 14 years, at which time she retired.
In 1993, Gary and Carol became volunteer curators at the Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery where they enjoyed sharing the history of Prairie County with visitors from all over the world.
Carol was 100% dedicated to all activities she was involved in and the following are a few of the highlights: Eastern Star (Grand Officer ’97-‘98/50 yrs), joined the International Order of Rainbow of Girls and then served as the Mother Advisor of Rainbow for many years, American Legion (50 yrs), Terry Community Presbyterian Church (Clerk of Session (19 yrs), Sunday School Teacher, Presbyterian Women, and Church Elder), 4-H (Leader), Cowbells, Ash Creek Homemakers, and Republican Women.
Carol is proceeded in death by her parents (Harold and Jessie Brubaker), and husband (Gary).
Carol is survived by her Brothers: Albert J (Dixie) Brubaker, Columbus, MT, Edward (Chely) Brubaker, Polson, MT. Children: Del Linda Frost of Fallon, MT, Lorna Pettigrew (Jim Younkin) Frenchtown, MT, David (Tana) Washburn, ND, and Lorin (Jamie) Terry, MT, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

My condolences for the loss of your mother. What a legacy she has left for all of you and for all of us. She was a woman of faith, serving in God’s church, teaching Sunday School for many years, serving as President of Presbyterian Women, serving on session and as clerk of session. She often served as voting delegate to Yellowstone Presbytery. In addition, she volunteered at the Evelyn Cameron Museum and was active in the Prairie County Republican Women and Republican Central Committee. She loved her children, grandchildren and the great ones as well. She was a good friend.

We looked forward to visiting Carol in the years after we moved back to Iowa. She was always interested in the museum, activities at the church, sharing family joys. I guess it is so hard to cover all memories. It meant so much to be able to write to her after she moved on to
We are saddened to learn that Carol has died, but we also understand that life was more difficult for her, so want to say that we loved hearing from her and thank her family for keeping us informed when she moved into the nursing home. Our prayers for comfort and celebrating a wonderful person on the 5th. We so wish it would be possible for us to be there, but health keeps us home.
Lowell & Reta Johnson says
