Catherine Kate Redman, age 84 of Miles City, passed away on Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Holy Rosary Healthcare surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Kate was born in Ulm, Wyoming on May 19, 1925, the daughter of Robert and Lena (Olivetti) Hamby. She attended the Twin Buttes country school through the sixth grade, and continued her education in Ismay, where she graduated from high school in 1943. In the fall of 1943, Kate and her sister Ella Mae moved to Billings. She worked at F.W. Woolworth and the Kyle Company during that time. Kate married Charles Redman on April 10, 1946 in Baker, MT. They lived on the Redman family ranch for 57 years before moving to Miles City in 2003. She was always ready to help with the lambing and would bottle feed many bum lambs. When it was haying time she did all the mowing. And she could chop a head off a chicken in nothing flat. Kate was an excellent cook. Whether preparing a meal for her family, or a feast for neighbors and friends, she made sure you never left her house hungry. She was also an amazing seamstress, making any scrap of fabric look like a masterpiece.

If Kate could describe her perfect day, it would have to include a fishing pole in her hand. She loved to fish and her grandsons have special memories of her and their Grandpa Charles going on many fishing trips. Kates favorite dance partner was her husband, Charles and together they loved to attend dances. Many nights were spent at fiddle practice, dancing and socializing with their friends. She also enjoyed playing cards and could be seen walking to the Drop-In Center on any given Monday or Thursday afternoon to try her hand and share some goodies. Most of all, Kate was devoted to and loved her family. She will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Charles, daughters Peggy (Earl Mortensen) of Forsyth, and Marilyn (Rod) Kelly of Ismay, two grandsons, Shawn (Candice) Kelly of Miles City and Troy Kelly of Ismay, two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan Kelly of Miles City, brothers Bill (Carole) Hamby of Spokane, WA, and John (Shirley) Hamby of Billings, MT, and a sister-in-law Thelma Hamby of Billings. She was also known as Grandma Kate to the Berzel and Knuths kids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Melvin and Chuck and sister Ella Mae.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 17th with the family to receive friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Grace Bible Church. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery.
