In Memory Of

Cathy Bastian, age 71, of Miles City.

March 14, 1954 – May 25, 2025

Cathy Anette Bastian, age 71, passed away at the Advanced Care Hospital of Montana on Sunday, May 25, 2025 in the presence of her loving family.

Cathy Bastian was born on March 14, 1954, in Miles City, the daughter of Ralph and Alice (Greenfield) Weyerbacher. She was the oldest of three children (Peggy Hirsch and Cody Weyerbacher) and grew up on a farm in Kinsey, MT. Childhood was filled with many farm life adventures. Some of her fondest memories growing up were with her Grandma Antionette Weyerbacher. Cathy would tell stories of how Grandma would sneak sweet treats to her and her sister, Peggy. Cathy attended grade school in Kinsey and high school in Miles City. She graduated Salutatorian in 1972 from Custer County District High School. Jim and Cathy were high school sweethearts (Jim swears she hated him half of the time) and married on July 21, 1972. Children soon followed: Chris, Amber, Wendy, Karin, Megan, Timothy, and Daniel. God had three special gifts in store for Cathy and Jim. Three of their children (Amber, Wendy and Daniel) were born with a rare chromosome disorder (that was later named The Bastian Syndrome) and would require extra special attention and care. Cathy worked as a full time Mom until all the kids were old enough to attend school. It was at this time, Cathy started working at Reynolds Market as the store secretary and jill-of-all-trades. She was Jim’s right hand lady at the store. Cathy was known for her kindness, great smile, contagious laugh, and a huge heart. She always wanted to help people, especially children. She would always go around saying “Don’t steal my blessings!” if people wouldn’t accept her acts of kindness. Children knew Cathy in two ways: a Kindergarten aide (with Sherri Henderson’s Kindergarten Class) and the giver of suckers/treats from the Reynolds Store Office. Cathy LOVED being a Kindergarten aide. She took on the role of Grandma Cathy and loved those students like her very own. Cathy was a strong advocate for special needs children and often acted as a resource for assisting families in need. Cathy’s last job was that of the church secretary at Grace Bible Church. She carried on her tradition of giving out candy to the children but also took over the very important role of the church greeter. She was the first and last face everyone saw coming or going from the church. She always had a friendly smile and responded with sensitivity and grace.

Cathy’s delights in life were Christian music, Jesus, and loving on people. She loved all her friends and family. She was easy to talk to, sincere, and genuine. People were naturally drawn to her and knew she would be their friend. Cathy LOVED her children, grandchildren, and most of all her husband, Jim.

Cathy is survived by her husband Jim Bastian (married just shy of 53 years; children Chris (Cassie) Bastian of Casselton ND, Karin (Scott) Helmig of Warrenton, MO, Megan (Kyle) Oliver of Waterloo, IA, and Timothy (Mandi) Bastian of Miles City; siblings Peggy (Larry) Hirsch of Kinsey and Cody (Toni) Weyerbacher of Kinsey; along with 17 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Alice Weyerbacher, in-laws Elwyn and Evelyn Bastian, children Amber, Wendy and Daniel, and granddaughter Annaleigh.

With tears in my eyes, I think of Cathy, Jim & all their children, as I write. This “Woman More Precious Than Jewels” (a Bible study we did together), was so wise in her intelligence, medical, relationships, business, handling home affairs, children, humility, & mostly Spiritual knowledge in life! God Blessed her so! She & Jim were rocks in dealing with their life. I’m not sure which was the strongest…God was, because they both relied on Him as The Rock! I was thinking that she is now in Heaven with their other children, & she is so happy! I bet God put her in charge of all those “Little Angels” to love on. And what a fine job she will do! May Father God carry you, Jim & Kids through these hard days ahead to His Peace & Calm & Loving memories of your Wife, Mother & Grandmother! 🩵

To the family of Sweet Loving Cathy: She now has a new resident , a mansion with golden streets, music, joy, , no more pain and more laughter. I can just see her dancing with Amber, Wendy and Daniel and Russ giving her a reson to laugh. She was the most precious, sweetest , encouraging and lovingest friend. You will laugh often thinking about her and now she can make Jesus laugh too My heart has a happy ache for her.

Thoughts are with Cathy & Jim’s family as they gather today to say their goodbyes. Cathy has been a delight her whole life and I loved the video you made of her. Always caring, always smiling and very sweet. Its unthinkable to lose our high school sweethearts after 40-50+ years of marriage, but it happens. Sympathies and hugs to Jim and your family. 😢

Dear Tim and families and all your loved ones. I live near by Grace Bible. I stood outside with my service dog in her stroller today during the service. I prayed. I have gone many times past the Bastian home and prayed. Your Cathy is celebrating with Jesus and her children and parents and grandchild and all the saints. I just watched the beautiful video and celebration of the life of your mom, your dad’s bride and the grandma of many. I believe your family touched many lives in the past and today. Many will come to know Jesus. And your mom is smiling about that. God bless you all

When I first met Cathy in the hospital, I thought I was helping her with her youngest son, but over the next 30 plus years I realized she helped me and was my guiding angel. She always had a smile for everyone, but if you wanted to see that smile grow, just place a child in her arms! I will miss your hugs sweet Cathy! God’s strength for her family.
