July 23, 1923 – June 2, 2013

Cecelia Leah “Nâhkȯhma’heona’e ” (Medicine Bear Woman) Kinzel, Medicine Elk went home to be with Maheo on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at the age of 89,  in 2 months she would have been 90. She had been residing at Valley Health Care Center in Billings, MT since December 2011 due to failing health.

Cecelia was born on July 23, 1923 in Lame Deer, MT to Alice Harris Kinzel and Jerry Kinzel. She grew up on the family ranch, North of Lame Deer.

Cecelia married Bennie Limberhand in 1940. 10 children were born from this union. Bennie passed away in 1954. Cecelia then had 4 more children from her marriage to Grover Whiteman.

Cecelia was preceded in death by her parents Jerry and Alice Kinzel, siblings: Emma Fotland, Rose Rapos, Helen Highwalker, Ruth Kinzel, Jerry Kinzel and Virgil Kinzel. Children: Herman Limberhand, Bennie Limberhand, Lillian Limberhand, Elizabeth Limberhand and Germaine Whiteman, and husband Virgil Medicine Elk.

Surviving siblings: Oscar (Gloria) Kinzel of Lame Deer, MT and Cyrilla Bear Chum of Ashland, MT.  Children: Rosalie Tallbull, Denver, CO; Dennis Limberhand, Ballantine, MT; Chet (Trish) Limberhand, Billings, MT: Joyce Knowshisgun, Albuquerque, NM; Maynard (Ursula) Limberhand, Havre, MT; Doris Limberhand, Billings, MT; Rynalea Whiteman Pena, Lame Deer, MT; Grover Lee Whiteman, Billings, MT; and Gary Lightning of Spokane, WA.

Mom was a generous soul and was always helping and thinking about others no matter what. She worked on many local projects to help keep her community safe. Grandma “C” will be fondly remembered for her friendly disposition and her beautiful smile that lit up the room. She was always “there” for her family and friends.Mom was very proud and appreciative of the honorary degree that she received from Chief Dull Knife College.

Grandma “C” lovingly raised many grandchildren; her greatest joy was spending time with her 100+ grandchildren, her 50+ great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and all of her nieces and nephews. Mom had a gentle, loving and kind heart, she adopted many into our family. Mom also had many, many special friends and relatives. Thank you to all, HaHo.

Grandma Cecelia was one of the few people I’ve known who never had anything bad to say about anyone. Even when circumstances were grim, she never lost her sparkle and her smile.
