Cecil N. Brown, age 81, passed away on November 14, 2003, at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.
Cecil was born on August 8, 1922, in Minong, Wisconsin, the son of Emerson and Vivian (Banks) Brown. As a young boy, he moved with his parents and seven siblings to the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. After graduation from Stevensville High School in 1940, he attended the University of Montana and completed his law degree 1945. One of his favorite anecdotes from college days was the night he and a fellow law school classmate “borrowed” the School of Forestrys prize moose head. The trophy was held at an undisclosed location for a period of time and then mysteriously returned to the foresters “Score one for the Law School!”
Following law school graduation, Cecil was employed as a clerk for the Montana Supreme Court. When a job opening occurred in Prairie County for a county attorney, he accepted the position and moved to Terry, Montana in 1946, where he ably served in that capacity for 33 years. It was in Terry that Cecil met Hazel Murphy, a Circle, Montana native, and they were married on August 25, 1947 in Glendive, Montana. The family continued to live in Terry until 1973 when they moved to Baker, Montana, where Cecil continued his practice of law. Tucson, Arizona, became home of Cecil and Hazel with their move in 1981. There they enjoyed operating a retail shop in an office building for several yeas before retirement.
As the family reflects on Cecils life, a favorite memory in his boundless enthusiasm for sports and his knowledge of sports facts and stats. He became a Chicago Cubs fan in 1935 and this year was such a highlight for him as he cheered “the Cubbies” on to the National League Playoff!
Cecil was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; his parents; two sisters, Margaret Graham and Shirley Squires; ant three brothers, Everett, Herbert (Bud), and Ken Brown. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Art) Barz of Billings; and three sons, Mike (Pat) Brown of Tucson, AZ; Neil (Lori) Brown of Renton, WA; and Kelly Brown (Ted Silverman) of New your City, NY. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Darcy Barz of Palatine, IL; Karla (Rick) Stauffer of Grapevine, TX; Tonya (Tyler) Bush of Carmel, IN; Ian Brown of Renton, WA; and a great-grandson, Shane Stauffer of Grapevine, TX. Other survivors include his sister, Marilyn Shoemake of Portland, OR, and his brother, Robert Brown of Stevensville, MT
