Charles E. Pehl, age 73, of Terry passed away on Friday, April 29, 2005 at his home in the comforting arms of his wife, Alice.
Charles was born in Terry, Montana on October 14, 1931, the son of William and Mary (Fleming) Pehl. He was raised on the family farm southeast of Terry. Following his graduation from Terry High School in 1950, he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Chara, an ammunition ship, during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1955, Charles and Alice Youngquist were united in marriage in Circle, Montana. They bought a farm next to the Pehl family farm where they raised a family and have resided their whole lives together.
In addition to farming his whole life, Charles had a crop spraying business for many years. He was well known for his humor and story telling, most of which were true and based on his won experiences. Charles and Alice enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends and every trip resulted in a new adventure upon which a funny story was based. In recent years, they especially enjoyed traveling to reunions with the crew of the U.S.S. Chara. Charles was also known for his creativity and resourcefulness with farm equipment. He took pride and found satisfaction in solving problems and many pieces of discarded equipment found new life and purpose from the skill of his hands. His shop was often a point of last resort for neighborhood equipment which was returned in as good as or better than new condition. Charles enjoyed building and flying remote control airplanes. He was well read and in the evening could be found in his recliner with a book, magazine, parts manual, or phone book near at hand. Family, friends, and even strangers found Charles to be extraordinarily giving and kind, especially to those in need.
Charles is survived by his wife, Alice Pehl of Terry, MT; his children: Stan Pehl of Salem, Oregon; Lorna Stickel and her husband Will of Torrington, WY and their children: Quinn and Kylie Hunter; and Glenn Pehl and his son Tate of Terry. He is also survived by his sisters: Jean Boyer and her husband Lloyd of Billings, MT; and Evelyn Jone’s and her husband Dick of Powell, WY; one brother, George Pehl and his wife Jane of Whitehall, MT; sister-in-law Ann Pehl, brothers-in-law Kenneth Youngquist and his wife Norma of Circle, MT; and Rodney Youngquist and his wife Ann of Canby, Oregon; and sister-in-law Marilyn Mittelstaedt of Stanwood, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Edith Shipley, a brother, John Pehl, and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Mittelstaedt.
