Charles John (Johnny) Jonutis passed peacefully early Sunday morning, May 22nd 2022, at 90 years old. Born to Stella and Joseph Jonutis, Sr. on October 11, 1931 Miles City, MT. He was a good son, brother, uncle, grand-uncle, great-grand uncle, neighbor and friend.
He worked hard as a farmer and rancher on the Powder River his entire life. Raised in the midst of the great depression, he assisted, and later took over, the complete operation of the family ranch after his two elder brothers were called to serve in the military in WWII; both brothers pursuing separate careers at war’s end.
Johnny graduated from Custer County High School in 1951. He loved ranching and farming; especially enjoying the great outdoors through his hobbies of hunting and photography of wildlife and scenic views. His favorite view was that of the prominent ‘sunset buttes’ west of the ranch. He was also a volunteer weather observer; recognized for over 60 years of service by the weather bureau.
Johnny was the last of his family’s generation; preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Edward and Joseph Jr.; and sister, Lillian.
He is survived by two nieces Roberta (Gene) Allard, JoAnne (Gary) Herem; and two nephews James (Donna) Jonutis and Stanley Jonutis; one grandniece, two grand nephews and two great-grand nephews.
Johnny’s ashes will be spread in private on the ranch he loved.
A gathering will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21st, 2022, at The Parlor, 1806 Main Street in Miles City. The family invites everyone to join them for light refreshments and fellowship.

John gave me the weather in the morning, and the road conditions in the winter. He always had something good to say.

I could always count on John giving me a wind report @ 5am to spray the Mizpah Farm…it was a long way from Rock Springs to fly down there to find out the spray conditions were not correct…To John’s family…this was a humble man with a big heart….God will bless U and your family!!
Jim and Annalise Willson says
John was a great neighbor to us when we lived on the Mizpah Ranch. John was also a longtime Family Friend when My Mother Marie (Roberts) Willson grew up on Laney Creek just north of Strevelle Creek where John and his family lived. Rest IN Peace John. Prayers to his family and the Allard family

To all who lost a relative or close personal friend, I extend my sympathy. I was sad to learn of Johnny’s passing. He was gracious in sharing his tales of early life in the Miles City area in Facebook groups and on his page. I knew he loved his new dog and delighted in living independently on his place on the Powder River. We occasionally exchanged messages and comments on Facebook. I had hoped he was doing well and that I might get a chance to hear some of his stories on a future trip to Montana. Johnny’s friends have lost a good man.
