Charles S. Redman, age 91, of Miles City, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at Holy Rosary Healthcare of congestive heart failure.
Charles was born in a private home near Ismay, Montana on November 16, 1922, the son of Winfield and Jetta (Dickson) Redman. He attended country schools the first through the eighth grades. He attended high school in Ismay. He boarded with friends of the family during the week and went home to the family ranch on the weekends. He graduated with the class of 1940. Following graduation, he continued working on the family ranch. On April 10, 1946 he married Catherine “Kate” Hamby in Baker, Montana. They resided on the family ranch for 57 years before moving to Miles City in the spring of 2003.
Charles was an accomplished hunter, fisherman, mechanic, rancher and story teller. But of all these, he was most proud of the many days he spent herding sheep. He spent several years poisoning prairie dogs for the government. He frequently spoke of the people he met, and the experiences he had while doing this. Charles loved good old fashioned fiddle music, and along with Kate spent many hours dancing at the Drop-In Center in Miles City. They attended dances across eastern Montana. They spent many good times meeting new friends at annual dances held in Besant Park in Canada.
Survivors include two daughters: Peggy (Earl Mortensen) Redman of Forsyth and Marilyn (Rod) Kelly of Ismay, MT; two grandsons: Shawn (Candice) Kelly of Miles City and Troy Kelly of the Redman family ranch of Ismay, two great grandchildren: Rachel and Ryan Kelly of Miles City. Extended family members include Berzels, Cranes, Knuths and Karen Morris. Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Kate; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Alice Springer.
The legacy Charles left with his family was, “Never be afraid to crowd in when there is a lot of hard work to be done.”

It is said that you can choose your friends but not your relatives, well, the Redmans & Burkes chose to become fast friends about four generations ago. This friendship was handed on thru the Joneses and continues today. What a welcoming party there will be with his beloved Kate, Winfield & Jetta, J.C., Verne & Marg, his cohort in mischief, Jack and many others. I wonder if the Fiddlers will be playing. We will miss Charles’ good nature, funny tales and laugh. Rest in peace good friend. Elwin and Trink

We are so sorry to hear of Charles’ passing. This last month has brought lots of old memories to the forefront. Like I said earlier, when I visited you as a kid I was really coming to see Charles. I hope the good memories will help you find peace within yourselves. I know Charles has found it.

Miss Redman my heart goes out to you and your family this holiday season. There is nothing that compares to the loss of a parent. I will miss mine both for always…
Brenda Witkowski says
You all have been on my mind today. I can only think what a wonderful Christmas gift for Gramma Kate to have Grampa Charles join her in Heaven! I can hear her signature laugh when he walked through those gates! Can you hear the fiddles playing in celebration? I bet she has already tossed him a fishing pole and is showing him where the good spots are! What a reunion! This couple will always hold a very special place in my heart, Grampa Charles taught me how to fancy dance. They gave me my first fiddle bow and rosin and fueled my love for fiddle music. Thank you for sharing them with me!
Rhonda Detwiler says
I am so sorry for everyone’s loss… my heart aches for all of Charles’ family and friends. We will all miss the sound of his unique and what one might say, ‘contagious’ laugh (I can still hear his chuckle!). What can a person say that has not been lovingly mentioned above — Charles and Kate are now scoping out their next fishin’ hole (or perhaps dancin’)!! I, personally, will never forget the many Thanksgivings we spent together out at their ranch… fun times for all! May you, Marilyn and Peggy, and all of your family members find some level of comfort knowing that so many of us were touched by your dad. Love and blessings, Rhonda

Everybody ought to have an Uncle Charles – to remind you that work is important but so is fun and we should aim high but never think we’re all that special. The twinkle in his eye and the sense of humor behind it and the chuckling that was going to fill the room pretty soon will always be with me. Happy trails, cowboy!
Sherry Oster says
Thinking of all of you during this most difficult time! Charles was always one of my favorite people! To me he will always be the Double L Lamb Licker! 🙂 hugs and praying for your family!

Marilyn, Peggy and Family—What a great time of the year for Charles to leave us. I always felt that if it hadn’t been for Jesus’ Birth Mom wouldn’t be having the Peace & Joy that she has now. It made that Christmas sad for us but what a Joy for those that get to spend it in Heaven.
Love you and Prayers going up for you.
Denny Redman says
Uncle Charles was what the word “uncle” meant to me growing up and spending summers out at the ranch, coming on the train from further west in Hamilton with Don. I’d go for it all over again in a heartbeat if it could happen. Probably the funniest time though, was when I showed up in a VW bug with long hair with a couple of other suspicious fellows (now state senators etc.) and Kate met me at the door with a shotgun and held it on us till Charles stuck his head out the bathroom window by the back door and yelled, ” It’s OK, Kate, it’s Denny!” They invited neighbors over to have a look at us as well and couldn’t get over all that long hair.
There never will be another Charles like my unforgettable Uncle.
Jacque Thomas says
Kate and Charles were like grandparents to me. I couldn’t wait to eat Kate’s mashed potatoes, and peanut butter with maple syrup on pancakes she would cook when we stayed. Charles thought me how to wink which I learned quickly would take me a long ways, for he would give me a quarter for each one I would send his way. Lots of wonderful memories like shirring a black sheep to spin its wool into that years mittens for school. They both touched my life in a truly wonderful way. I only wish the family in this time of grief, to find the serenity they both brought me when they walked with us to make those memories. What a wonderful example of a good man. Peace be with you all.
Vickie and Dennis Krause says
Peggy, I am sorry to hear about your Dad. I never knew him, but reading the comments, he must have been a wonderful person…just like his daughter. Our prayers go out to you.
Marianne Hockema says
All of your cousins in Minnesota — the HOckemas and the Ellis’ send you are sincere sympathy at the passing of Charles. Both he and Kate were originals — the most genuine, down-to-earth and talented people you could ever know. Both loved their family beyond words, cherished their beautiful ranch in Montana and were faithful shepherds to thousands of sheep and cattle . .and a few lucky horses as well. And best of all, both Charles and Kate knew how to have fun . . .gifted with musical abilities both in playing instruments and surely in dancing. Like many of the Redmans, Charles was a renaissance man — he could do anything — from poisoning prairie dogs to herding sheep to branding cattle to raising beautiful children and grandchildren . . . He was the type of man that many men aspire to be — but few ever achieve his level of integrity, honesty, resourcefulness and genuine and abiding love for his wife and family. He was absolutely adored by his family — in Montana and in Minnesota. Heaven is a happier place today because Charles and Kate are celebrating in in grand style with a perfect two-step across the heavens. God bless.
Lane R. Ellis says
Rest in peace, Charles. My deepest condolences and love to all the Redman family and friends. I’ll never forget my visit with Charles and Kate in 2009 or 2010, and I am lucky to have the recording of my interview with them about family history.

I am very sorry for your loss, but I know you have many good and fun memories of Charles. I met Charles and Kate at the dances, and once when I complimented him on what a good dancer he was, he grinned and said, “Yes. And I got a lot better after I quit drinking and fighting!” I think of them often and it is always a joyful memory.
Glenna Obie says

Having only recently met Charlie as a participant in a couple of outings from the Extended Care Facility, I can attest that he had an impact on strangers right up to the end. Peggy & Earl,
Sorry to hear of your father’s passing. Have been on the receiving end of many stories of your family. keep them in your heart.
J Johnson says
Dear family of Charles S. Redman – I am sorry to hear of your loss. Even after a relatively long life, we naturally have the desire to continue to enjoy life because God put eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). It was never God’s intention for us to suffer or die. In the beginning, all of his creation was without defect and it could said that everything was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Death was introduced through Adam’s disobedience (Romans 5:12). There will soon come a time when no one will be sick (Isaiah 33:24). Also the Bible promises a resurrection of dear family members and friends that we have lost (John 5:28, 29). I hope you are comforted by Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).
Terri Harrsch(Oster) says
Marilyn, Peggy and family,
So sorry to hear of Charles’ passing. I was just telling Dot the other day how I still see him in my minds eye-it was at my wedding and how we were dancing and he kept stepping on my dress and how we just kept dancing and laughing. I remember dancing with him quite a bit at functions because he danced like Dad and I never worried that we would ever run into another couple. He was one of my favorite people and will always remember his awesome laugh and how well he treated even us young ones-like we were the most important people in the room. May you and Kate dance to your hearts content! It’s good to know we have such wonderful angels watching over us! Keep the light on for us!
Darryl Redman says
I truly feel blessed to have had an uncle like Charles. I was fortunate that I travelled to Miles City enough to be able to visit him often. I will miss those visits immensely – he was a wonderful uncle, a great friend and a link to the past with his great stories. I will miss his humor and I will always appreciate who he was, his love for his family, and the way Charles and Kate always rolled out the red carpet for us.
Dennis Kenney says

Shawn & Candace and kids –
Cherish your wonderful memories. Charlie was a good friend of my Dad’s and they played and enjoyed many music gigs together. My Dad always spoke so highly of Charlie. It sounded like he was a wonderful man. They are probably having one heck of a jam session up in heaven right now!! With sympathy to your entire family.
Cheryl Tonn says
I will think of Charlie whenever I hear I’ll be All Smiles Tonight. He wanted Rick to learn it so I recorded it for him to practise as he didn’t read music. The first night I met Charlie was at the Drop In Center. I went there because Rick was invited to play with the group that night. I was a new female face and Charlie asked me to dance and did we dance. He said I’ll bet you don’t know how old I am ! and I was shocked when he told me. He was flirty and handsome in his 80’s for sure !!! Makes me smile. We had some good over their backyard fence visits to be sure- especially when he and Kate returned from their early morning fishing trips. I’ll bet he is really smiling since joining Kate up there in heaven. What a kind man and a true gentleman he was. You will all miss him I know and I pray the pain of his loss even though he was blessed to live to 91 will ease soon.
