In Memory Of

Christopher “Chris” Cameron, age 85, of Miles City

October 22, 1933 – August 9, 2019

On the afternoon of August 9, 2019, at the age of 85, Chris passed away as a result of a pickup accident while checking cows, his favorite pastime. Chris was born in October 22, 1933 in Miles City to John and Jessie Cameron. He attended school at              Dick Creek school until 1944 when they moved to Miles City and he graduated from Custer County High School in 1951.   He ran sheep with his dad on the Mizpah and the Dersham place north of Terry. It was here that he met his future wife Delores Roos. On September 4, 1961 Chris and Delores were married and moved to a farm west of Terry. They had four children, Delite, Clark, Twila and Connie.

Chris and Delores moved into a shell of a house as they completed all the inside work, including the cupboards. In the early days Chris raised sheep and beets. When beet equipment started wearing out, and his sheep barn blew over, he decided to go into cattle feeding. He fed up to 800 head of cattle a winter. Chris was president of the Buffalo Rapids Project for several years. He also was in the Terry Roping Club and didn’t miss working at the July 4th rodeo, even when it was hotter weather than a Scottsman liked. When they moved to town in 1992, Chris renovated three homes in Miles City. In 2002 Chris got bucked off a horse and broke his neck and back. The doctors didn’t think he’d walk again, but he proved them wrong. He never got around as well after that, but he insisted on helping us kids and grandkids whenever he could, one of his latest projects was helping Dani butcher thirteen chickens and then smoke them. He was a member of the Range Rider’s Museum board and a helper for several years. In 2013 he received the LP Anderson award for his contributions in the community. He got to be quite the expert with smokers and making sausage. He always brought sausage to family gatherings. He was very artistic and could draw horses very well, he even tried molding clay, and was good at making dioramas.   His latest diorama was a Montana wildlife scene that he could view from his chair in the living room. He also liked to watch football and his Chicago Bears. He always had a friendly rivalry with his grandsons, Tate & Tel, and his daughter Connie. His granddaughter, Annika, made the best cakes and cupcakes. His two great grandchildren, Coy & Raelynn, entertained him whenever he babysat them. He loved to follow his grandkids sports, garden, and visit. He was always working on some kind of carpentry project. He loved the Jenny’s Pine Hills place that his son, Clark leased, and would always brag about the grass out there. He loved checking the water and just checking the cows in general, so it’s very fitting he left us doing something he loved.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents John and Jessie Cameron, his sister and brother-in-law Isabel “Tootie” and Tom Zook, his nephew John Scott Cameron, and his son-in-law Darren Dukart.

Chris is survived by his wife Delores of 57 years, his children Delite Dukart, Clark (Johnna) Cameron, Twila (Craig) Lunde and Connie Cameron; his grandchildren Dani (Tim) Hudson, Tate, Tel and Annika Lunde, Kenny Melrose & family, Pete Melrose, and Nathan Blankenship and two great-grandchildren Coy and Raelynn Hudson. His siblings Donnie (Cathy) Cameron of California and Kenny (Ginger) Cameron of Quesnel, British Columbia and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the Range Riders Museum at 435 LP Anderson Road, Miles City, MT 59301.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Range Riders Museum in Miles City. A lunch will be served at 1:00 p.m followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at the Range Riders Museum in Miles City. Burial will follow in the Prairie County Cemetery in Terry, MT at 4:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

I met Chris just a few short months ago. He would come in and sit and tell stories about his childhood, his children, and grandchildren. He was so proud of his family. I will miss these times so much. He was truly a bright spot in my day. I must saying visiting with him was a great pleasure. The last time I saw him he was headed out to take care of his great grandchildren. What an amazing man! I am so sad that I will never get to taste the kohlrabi he had for me. He was telling me how big and great they were. I’ll never eat another without thinking if him.

  39. Pastor Jerry and Bev Collins says

    August 12, 2019 at 4:52 pm

    To Delores and family
We received a call this morning from our church Secretary 1st United Methodist Church letting us know about Chris and to put him and family on our church prayer chain, which I did immediately. We send our heart felt sympathies and know that God is taking good care of him. From reading about his life, that he sounded like a very caring and strong man, and one we would have loved getting to know. We have only been here 5 years, as my husband was asked to serve here as pastor, but has since retired as of a few months ago, but will be here for a little while.
In reading about some of Chris’s adventures, I read where he had had an accident on a horse that caused him to break his back and neck, and was told that he would never walk. Obviously he proved them wrong. I had an accident when I was 14 riding a horse and got tossed up into the top of a gate, and ended up with a fractured back, and wore a brace for two years.
May the message that you hear on Wed. Give you comfort, as well as all those that will surround you now and in the difficult days ahead. May God wrap His loving arms around you and may you feel His Presence. God Bless each and everyone of you.
May you cherish the wonderful memories
Retired Pastor Jerry, and Bev Collins.
