In Memory Of

Chuck Steadman, age 84, of Miles City.

November 29, 1939 – October 27, 2024

Charles (Chuck) Edgar Steadman was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 29, 1939. He was the youngest of 4 children born to AJ and Bonnie.

Chuck married his lifelong partner, Peggy, on August 12, 1961, and they brought their children Tim, Tammie and Teri into the world while residing in Farmington, MN. These first children were born while Chuck was working several jobs, along with running the gas station he had owned since he was a mere 18 years old.

Chuck and Peggy eventually saved up enough money to start along their path to fulfilling their dream of owning a hardware store.

In late September of 1967, at the ages of 28 and 25, along with Tim (age 5), Tammie (age 3), and Teri (infant) the family arrived in Miles City, Montana. They opened their Coast to Coast Hardware store on Main Street, October 1, 1967. Three years later, Todd was born. The core family unit was later completed with the birth of Tricia in 1971.

Chuck worked side-by-side with Peggy. They never missed a dinner, a ball game or a school function. Work, Church and Home defined Chuck’s days.

In 1983, after several hardware store expansions, the couple fulfilled another dream: owning a ranch. They bought ground north of Miles City, where to his final day on earth, Chuck worked cattle and sheep and farmed with his children and grandchildren!

The Steadman family has grown over the years, and those 2 young kids from MN have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and have joyously celebrated many weddings and receptions. Now, there are 55 seats at the Steadman Holiday Table – surely with more to come.

Chuck was an active Rotarian and promoter of business for the community he called his home for 58 years – Miles City. He had lots of friends, which many would likely refer to as “customers.” But to Chuck, my dad, they were his friends.

Chuck spent his last day working cattle with Tim, and helping on a farming project with Jacob. But he still managed to make a trip to town to check on the results of the weekend’s annual Appliance Sale at ACE. Then it was time to go home to a delicious steak and potato dinner served by Peggy, the love of his life.

Chuck had just finished that fine meal and went to get ready to get his pajamas on — certainly thinking about the busy week ahead as there was shipping to occur at both ranches. It was then he suffered a massive heart attack and was unable to be revived. A perfect last day to a perfect and well-lived life of doing exactly what he wanted to do, where he wanted to do it, surrounded by who he wanted to do it with.

Chuck will be sorely missed. His absence is an absolute loss for the Steadman family and the community he loved and so dutifully served.

However, where one thing ends, another begins. As he sits in the Heavens tonight at the hand of God, I’m sure his own father, brothers and other loved ones are talking shop and celebrating a new beginning.

God bless you dad — know we will see each other again.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Peggy Steadman of Miles City, MT; two sons: Tim Steadman and his wife Neena of Miles City, MT;  Todd Steadman and his wife Misty of Miles City, MT; three daughters: Tammie Bjerke of Billings, MT; Teri Lindberg and her husband Kyle of Alzada, MT; Tricia Ellingson and her husband Curt of Miles City, MT, his sister Audrey (Chuck) Whittier of Lakeville, MN; and sisters-in-law Enid Steadman of Black Diamond, WA and Pam Woods of Eagan, MN; thirteen grandchildren:  Erin Ziebarth, Marisa (Will) Meredith, and Brilyn (Devin) Chamberlin; Jessica (Leland) Wells and David Bjerke; Mitch (Shayla) Lindberg and Brooke (Aaron) Helland; Jacob, Brytin and Addison Steadman; Tevin (Bailey) Ellingson, Makena (Travis) Dudeck and Channing Ellingson; nineteen great grandchildren:  Quinn and Kinslee Ziebarth; Erilyn and Glenn Meredith; Zadie, Grace and Clara Chamberlin; Gavin, Shiloh, Dallas and George Wells; Briggs and Kaybree Lindberg; Merik and Isla Helland; Rhyett, Remy and Ryver Ellingson; Alyse Dudeck; two babies due to be added to the family and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law Cyril and Irene Spaniol; two brothers: Art Steadman & Gene Steadman; sisters-in-law Sandra Steadman; Patty Kleve and brother-in-law Jerry Kleve.

Dear Peg & family, I was a teenager when your family bought the Coast to Coast next door to my dad’s store and I was so impressed by the rapid changes in that store. It was bright, clean and chock full of inventory – it was a different store! He was so industrious that it was no surprise when the store expanded and grew. You were truly partners in an endeavor that added to the strength of the business community of Miles City. Chuck will be missed. He was such a nice man and always helpful and respectful of his customers. May your family be comforted through this difficult time. God bless.

Peggy, Tammie, Teri, Tim, Todd and Trish,

I am so sorry to hear the news of Chuck’s passing, and my thoughts and prayers are with you tonight.

I have so many good memories of Chuck and all of you. I feel like I grew up in the store with you. I spend almost every afternoon after school from 6th grade on, waiting on Mom (Erna) to get off work. I did my homework, helped stock, hours of keeping the glass shelves and glassware clean and dusted, facing product, and of course goofing off. Then there were all the times babysitting at the house. Oh, the stories I could tell about some of those escapades!

It been many years since I have talked to Chuck, but every time I did, I respected him more and more. The last time we spoke, I told him that he was one of the people that inspired me in my life and wasn’t sure if I should “thank him or blame him” for the fact that I now own a hardware store.

    Steadman family,

Chuck would often remind me of my mom coming in to get a window air conditioner for the sweltering apartment we girls were living in during high school, and that was a LONG time ago. He just told me the story again a year or so ago . . . remarkably thoughtful!! Chuck was a fine man.

I’m so sorry for each of you. I know God will walk with you through your sorrow. Prayers.

The Steadman family – Sorry to learn of Chuck’s passing. Although we are not Miles City natives, we lived there long enough to learn of the Steadman family’s positive contributions to the health and well-being of Miles City and Hood County. Chuck and Peggy and family were community leaders whom we learned to love and respect. Rod served with Chuck on the FIB Citizens Advisory group for several years. From that experience he learned of Chuck’s integrity, incredible business savvy, and the gift of hard work. He will be sorely missed by all who new him. God’s blessing to each and everyone of you!

    November 1, 2024 at 3:03 pm

The Lew Janssen family carries Chuck in a special place in our hearts. He was always at the store asking what we needed and guiding us to the right aisle to find that particular screw or plumbing fixture. And always with a twinkle in his eye, a smile on his face and a personal word or two. We would visit with Chick and Peggy in the Broadus gym watching his Broadus grandkids play ball. Family was obviously very important! Sending our sympathy and God’s blessings to all his family.

God has taken a lot of good ones home and your dad/grandpa/husband is no exception. I never missed an opportunity to take a minute to learn or hear from Chuck, whether it was coffee at vintage when I was working, in the store when I may or may not have needed help but followed him to the right aisle anyways,, to randomly in passing. He was truly a shining example of loyalty and perseverance. I am sorry I caught a cold and cannot be at his service to hug you all in person but be assured…. You all have one coming when I see ya! Much love and prayers

The Steadman family and the Partridge family both moved to Miles City during the fall of 1967 with children matching in age. Seems like we have known the family forever. Our prayers are with you as you adjust to your loss. Chuck made shopping at the Store a pleasure. Never a time in the store when he did not stop by with a smile and a friendly greeting. We shared many hours on bleachers cheering on the kids. It may be difficult now, but know that there is sunshine on the other side. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
