Clarence Krahn, age 88 of Wolf Point passed away Saturday, July 29, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Nursing Home.
Clarence was born February 10, 1918 in Langdon, ND to Jacob Krahn and Margaret Penner. He went to a country school in Langdon, ND where he did 3 years of high school and finished his senior year in Wolf Point, graduating with a diploma on July 15, 1935. He accepted the Lord and was baptized December 27, 1936 in the congregation of the Bethel Mennonite Church in Langdon, ND with Pastor Edward Duerksen. He registered for the draft in 1940 and went to the University of ND in Grand Forks in 1942, where he took up welding. On September 8, 1942 he was sent to conscientious objector camp at Snowline Camp Comino in California. On December 18, 1942 he left the camp and was inducted into the army as a non-combatant at Sacramento, CA. On December 20, 1942 he went to the reception center in Monterey, CA. On December 29, 1942 he went to Kearns, Utah for basic training in the Army. On March 8, 1943 he was sent to Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado for medical training. On January 18, 1944 he was shipped to the Azores Island of Portugal. He helped build an air field for the invasion of France. When that was done he went home on a 36 day leave. That is when he met Ella Hoch. Then he left port on ship for convoy to stop Japan on July 19, 1945, Japan surrendered before he got there. On September 19, 1945 he went to Okinawa and helped clean up the place after the war and helped build a hospital. He was honorably discharged from the army on January 22, 1946.
Clarence married Ella Krahn on April 5, 1946. They had one daughter Diane Krahn Hempel. Clarence worked for the Post office for 25 years and after he retired he worked part time for the Wolf Point public schools as a custodian for 9 years. Clarence served on the board of the United Mennonite Church, which later changed its name to the Community Bible Church. Some of Clarences hobbies were gardening, tilling other peoples gardens, growing African Violets, collecting stamps, cutting agates and he also picked cans. Clarence and his wife Ella enjoyed many trips seeing points of interest such as caves, gold mines, parks, Mount St. Helens Volcano, Quaker Lake, MT, mountains and lighthouses on the West Coast. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Clarence is survived by his daughter; Diane Krahn Hempel of Wolf Point; 8 grandchildren, Natalie Hempel Keiser of Wolf Point, Kevin Hempel of Grand Island, NE, Justin Hempel of Moline IL, Derek Hempel of Grand Island, NE, Rachel Hempel Czaplewski of Grand Island, NE, Stephanie Hempel Jone's of Bismarck, ND, Sarah Hempel of Grand Island, NE and Julie Hempel of Bismarck, ND; one brother Rueben of ND, and three half brothers Ben, Emil and Alvin.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ella; his parents, and step mother, and brothers Abe and Herb; and sisters Mary and Katie.
