Constance (Connie) Vogele, age 89, of Glendive, Montana passed away on June 7, 2010 at her home with her daughters by her side.
Connie was born on a cold winter day in Glendive, January 20, 1921 to William and Ida Gertison. Connie and her two sisters were third generation Montanans and grew up on the family homestead on their ranch next to the Yellowstone River. Their father claimed his girls were the best cowboys around, and they received their share of scrapes, scratches and broken bone's trying to prove he was right. On horseback she learned every twist and turn of Sand Creek, Magpie Creek and lower Cedar Creek while herding livestock. The annual wild horse roundup and the 4th of July Rodeo were highlights of her summers. In 1938 Connie graduated on the Top Ten list from Dawson County High School. After graduation, she became a secretary for MDU in Glendive and for the War Department in Billings and Denver. When the job was over she returned to the Montana ranch she loved. In 1944 she married her hero, Eugene (Gene) Vogele, the top hand on the Gertison ranch. The couple then purchased a country home west of Glendive where they raised their children with the same work ethics they had learned. After 46 years together, Gene passed away in 1991. Connie continued to live in their rural home and was a private person and a lifelong rodeo fan. A favorite pastime became writing poetry about her memories of The Dirty Thirties, The Great Depression, family and ranch life, with several pieces published.
