Cora C. Engdahl, age 98 of Billings, formerly of Jordan, Montana, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2006 at her daughters home in Billings.
Cora was born on October 26, 1908 in Helena, Montana, the daughter of Lucien Onesime and Annie Josephine (Deranleau) Forcier. The family moved to Moore, MT and then onto Piniele, Montana, near Hammond, where Cora attended grade school. She attended one year of high school in South Dakota and then attended high school in Broadus and graduated as the valedictorian. Cora attended a semester at the University of Montana in Missoula and then Eastern Montana College in Billings where she earned her teaching certificate. She moved to Jordan, Montana in 1930 and began teaching at the Hellcreek School.
On December 1, 1930, Cora and Lester Engdahl were married at Miles City and they made their home on the ranch at Hellcreek. Cora taught school for another year and then stayed at the ranch to raise her family and work the ranch. She was a full working partner with Lester in everything that needed to be done around the ranch. She was called on to run to town for this and that, to tend the sheep camp (to deliver food and water to the herders,) to help gather sheep and doctor lambs, and to tend the garden. For many years after the children were gone, she went along with Lester to help with feeding sheep and cattle or whatever she could help with. At docking time, she always did the vaccinating, right up until the sheep were sold when she was 91. After docking, she would go home and prepare a full dinner. Lester passed away in 1995 and Cora remained on the ranch until May of 2005 when due to her health, she moved to Billings.
Cora enjoyed her yard and working with flowers. She was fortunate to be able to do her own yardwork, mowing and watering, into her 90's. Reading was important to her and she kept up with the "world" by reading and watching the news. In early years, she completed many crocheted and tatted items. She looked forward to and enjoyed holiday family gatherings where she would be joining her sister, children and grandchildren. Most of all, however, she enjoyed her home and being on the ranch! She was a member of St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan and the Range Riders Reps.
Cora is survived by her son Robert and his wife Jane of Jordan, MT, her daughter, Arlys and her husband Ted Rieger of Billings, MT, a sister, Eva Moeller of Miles City, MT, a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Engdahl of Jordan, MT, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son Larry in 1999, and two brothers, Wilfred Bud Forcier and Lucien Onesime Forcier Jr. Boy.
