Cordell´s Cheyenne name was Toestôhene, Stringing Beads; he was named after his mother´s brother, Matthew Woodenlegs. Cordell grew up and was raised on his beloved Northern Cheyenne homeland. Cordell had a strong belief in the creator and was a ceremonial person.
His homeland gave him the freedom of always having a good horse and a good dog. He loved horses and hunting for deer so he could share the meat with family, friends, and relatives. Cordell spent many weekends riding horses with his nephew, Doc Wiley, and brother, Bitsy. His favorite horses were Midnight and Baby. Cordell always said riding his horse, Baby, was like riding a Cadillac. He was also an excellent artisan. He made beautiful pottery and paintings and was working towards establishing his own business. Cordell was working for the Northern Cheyenne Housing Authority repairing, painting and renovating homes. He was thankful for having a job and was serious about doing a good job for the people. Cordell enjoyed visiting with everyone.
He was in the process of moving his house to his dream piece of land that his mother gave to him. Cordell wanted to establish a home for himself and his companion and their children. He also looked forward to having a place for his grandchildren.
Cordell´s best moments were checking on his 84 year old mother everyday and was ever so gentle with his 88 year old dad. He consistently checked in with his sisters to make sure they were okay and if they needed anything. He will be deeply missed by his parents and his family and the many friends he made throughout this country.
Cordell is survived by his companion Jackie, his mother and dad, Horace and Mable Woodenlegs Small, his children; Cordell, Kaydell, Damien, Hazel, Stephanie, Royal, Tiffany, Dillon, Donita, Gabriel, Beau, Hunter, Precious, Gabriella. One daughter, Mandy preceded him in death. Cordell is also survived by his brothers; Clifford (Octa), Clayton (Maha), Horace Jr., and his sisters; Georgiann (Bruce), Jennie, Wanda, Carla, Gail (Joe), Geri, Max, Clarice, Vance, Geofredo, Carlos and special niece, DeWanda. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly, and many aunts, uncles & relatives. Our family is very large, we apologize if we forgot anyone.
Cordell was a proud grandfather and was very proud of his grandchildren. He was also very proud of Cordell Little Coyote who was named after him.
Cordell lived a hard life in his younger days but, he had turned it around and was living a good life...one in which he was very happy and helpful. It is from this good place in his life that he began his journey to our Creator Maheo.

Geri, I was so stunned at Cordells passing. I was just thinking about him last week about the deer ribs he said he was going to bring me. I thought that was funny about him wanting to bring them to me; but I know in his heart he would have brought them to me sooner and later. My prayers are with you and the family. It’s going to be tough but I know you are a strong woman and god will carry you through this. Love, Rhoda

My heart aches for the family of Cordell and you are in my prayers, especially Horace and Mabel. I will miss seeing his smile at work and the kind words that he always had for everyone. I remember when he first met Damian and Angie’s oldest baby Harmony Rose, he was so happy to see her. He brought her very thoughtful gifts, an inflatable rubber duck bathtub, a beautiful soft fuzzy pink blanket, and her walker, brand new with all the bells and whistles! He will be greatly missed, but he left so many wonderful memories. Have a good journey my friend.

Wow, don’t quite know how to put into words to adequately express my deepest sympathy to all who grieve such a great loss. When cordell seen anyone in time of need, he’d go out of his way to see to it himself that the need was met. he was ‘teaching’ me to build a fire in my fireplace one year… man he got my house so smokey!! couldn’t see beyond a foot in front of our faces! then of course explained to me exactly what NOT to do or that would happen every time… yep 🙂 very helpful that guy! my prayers go out for the small family and cordells kids especially… RIP my fren/brother
