In Memory Of

Curtis Kountz, age 53, of Miles City.

January 7, 1961 – February 23, 2014

Curtis Jay McDonald Kountz, age 53 passed away on February 23, 2014 at the Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, MT.

Curt was born on January 7, 1961 in Jordan, MT; the son of Gerald and Carolyn (Curtis) Kountz. Curtis came home from the hospital to meet his big brother Dickie Lee. Curt attended kindergarten in Sidney, MT. On the first day of school he started his trend of never meeting a stranger and brought seven of his classmate’s home. He attended the rest of his grade school years at Cohagen, MT. He started high school at Garfield County High School and finished his junior and senior years at Custer County District High School. After graduation he attended college at both Colby Kansas and Montana State University Bozeman. On June 1, 1985 he married Patty Frize at the Grace Bible Church in Miles City.  Curt worked various jobs early on such as with C & Y Pipe Yard in Casper, WY; at both the Green’s Ranch and McDonald’s Ranch at Cohagen and also as for the railroad as a railcar maintenance man in Miles City. Shortly after working for the rail road, Curt found his niche as a carpenter and cement specialist. He started his own business and established Curtis Kountz Construction.  Patty and Curt also owned and operated Mudds & Suds. Curt lived life to the fullest and always had a smile on his face. Curt was a member of the Federation of Independent Business, Miles City Youth Hockey Association, Miles City Youth Baseball Association and the Custer County Sports Booster Club.

Some of his enjoyments were: going to concerts, spoiling his grandkids and loved to fish. He loved watching his son Chaz in the various sports that he was involved in.

Curt is survived by his wife Patty of Miles City; his son Chaz (Kayla) Kountz of Marietta, GA; his parents Carolyn and Babe McDonald of Miles City; his two brothers Ken (Jennifer) McDonald of Columbus, OH and Colin (Amber) McDonald of Liberty Lake, WA; his mother in law Virginia Frize of Miles City and his brother in law Ron (Marilyn) Frize of Miles City. Curt is also survived by his two grandchildren Emery Kountz and Riley Kountz  He was preceded in death by his father Gerald Kountz; he brother Dick Kountz; his grandparents Ted & Ann Kountz and his father in law Carl Frize.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Bible Church in Miles City.  Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery.  Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements. We will all miss Curt dearly. Curtis with his infectious grin always cheered me up no matter the situation. This among many things I will miss greatly. Curt included everyone in his life so willingly. My oldest daughter Kyra was incredibly shy ,needless to say Curt would have non of this. Within 5 min. Curt had this shy creature wrapped around his finger screaming to be tickled again, and again. Even though I knew of Curt’s abilities to connect he never ceased to amaze me. I know we all have all been infected with his grin, and at some point after the services I hope this infectious grin will be on all of our faces in remembrance of a lanky CHARACTER named Curtis ( Mac the Hack if you played b-ball with him). Peace to all our thought’s are with you.

Curt and Dick were my best friends for many years, and I remember often the many days we would spend at Babe and Carol’s house both in Miles City and in the country. You were my second family, and I was thrilled to be a part of it. I will never forget the wonderful times Curt and I shared — goofing around, playing sports, road trips to Mexico, New Orleans, and just hanging out. I also remember when the boys were young and how your home and hearts were always open to ALL of them. I always knew Josh was safe and well cared for when he was with you. Chaz, I can only imagine what you must feel but your dad set a true example of what being a dad is all about and I know he taught you well. He will live on through you with your family. Dear Patty,
I have enjoyed running into to you and Curt quite a few times over the past few years. As we age, we all stare, wonder if we know that person, call each other the wrong names, but all have roots being from a small town and it was always so nice to see the two of you. Catch up about the “OLD” Days and last conversation was the “joys” of being Grandparents. You two seemed like a wonderful couple and both had contagious smiles. I will say lots of prayers and hope you have comfort in memories and good times. Life is short and we need to cherish everyone everyday that we are on this Earth and take nothing for granted. Ever need an ear, I am here. I am so sorry!!

    February 28, 2014 at 1:20 pm

    Carol and Babe,
My heart’s breaking for you. I’m so sorry. What an awesome boy you brought into this world, Carol. We had more fun growing up with Curt, spending summers at Grandpa Ted’s ranch and when he lived in Casper. He was happy. When I see his face in my mind, he’s laughing. He was always smiling. He would push me to smile if I wasn’t: he would poke at me, tease, even pick me up and throw me over his shoulder if I still wouldn’t smile. I don’t know what kept him going but something did. I don’t remember him ever being lazy or selfish or mean. I think he had more friends than anyone I know. But he nurtured those friendships. He always called, and stopped to visit. He remembered everyone’s name, their kids’ names and their friends’ names. You did a great job raising Curt and I know he loved and appreciated you both so much.

We were so sorry to hear about Curt’s passing away. It is so ironic how our families have become one and how Curt and Bill left days apart. How Ginny worked for us and Chaz and Kayla were babies under the counter at Bill’s. I am so thankful for Emery and Riley that we will share together as part of the Kountz and Kransky family.
