In Memory Of

Daniel ” Dan” Stanton, age 47, of Miles City, MT

December 8, 1967 – September 13, 2015

A Mass of Christian Burial for Daniel Joseph Stanton, 47, of Miles City, MT will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Sacred Heart School Gymnasium, Miles City, with Father Rob Oswald celebrating.  Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Baker, MT.

Visitation for Dan will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Miles City.  Rosary will take place at 5:30 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 6:00 p.m.

Dan passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Billings Clinic, Billings, MT.

After a valiant eight-year battle with a brain tumor, Daniel Joseph Stanton (Dan-Danny) was received back to the Lord on Sunday, September 13, 2015.  Dan was born December 8, 1967, in Circle, Montana, to James L. Stanton and Patricia (Wise) Stanton.  He received his elementary school education in Richey, Montana, and graduated from Baker High School in 1986 where he was an outstanding athlete.  He proceeded to play football and run track for Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota.  Dan later obtained a master’s degree in educational leadership from Montana State University, Bozeman.  He married Kimberly (Kremers) Stanton on August 4, 1990, and they began their teaching careers with the Miles City Unified School District in 1991.

Dan enjoyed being an educator.  However, coaching and working with young athletes was his true passion.  Dan coached athletics at all levels, from Little League to the high school varsity level.  He was most proud of all his Cowboy teams, especially his 2008 and 2010 teams, who, with his son Kyle, won the Class “A” State Championship.  Dan’s greatest victory is the reward of eternal life.  His passion for athletics arose from many heated football and basketball games with his six siblings.  Sports were everything to Dan’s family, and to this day, most family social gatherings and nearly all of their conversations revolve around an athletic event or discussion of an athlete.

Dan was a man of faith who lived a full and well-rounded life.  In his free time he loved to watch football and basketball, Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers, in particular.  In addition to his passion for athletic competition, Dan was an active member of the Sacred Heart Parish and Knights of Columbus in Miles City.   He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with his two sons, Kasey and Kyle.  Dan also enjoyed taking his two dogs, Jack and Doc, for long walks.  More than anything, Dan will be remembered for his positive attitude, tenacity, and mentorship.  His roles as an educator and coach allowed him to touch the lives of numerous students and athletes in the Miles City community and beyond. Dan’s competitive spirit, courage and toughness were contagious to all those around him. His sense of humor was quite unique.

Dan’s family and close friends were able to spend meaningful time with him during his final weeks.  He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Stanton.  Dan is survived by his wife Kim, his sons Kasey and Kyle, his mother Patricia, siblings and their families: Kathy and Dave, their children Brandon, Makayla, Alek and Kaleb; Jim and Karla, their children Marissa, James, Jacob and Michael; Pete and Candace, their children Luke and Maddy; Rob and Shelly, their son Connor; Missy and Brad, their children Tyson, Braden and Ryan; Terri and Nic, and their children Sadie, Nate, Ali and Patrick; as well as numerous cousins.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to “Wake Up & Lace Up,” in care of Cindy Reid (Address: 119 Balsam Drive, Miles City, MT 59301; Phone (406-234-3532) or to a charity of one’s choice.

The family asks that all of Dan’s current and former players please wear their jerseys and for everyone else to please follow Dan’s lead and dress casual with Cowboy athletics gear.

Just heard the sad news this morning from one of Dan’s colleagues. When I was in junior high and high school, I had the misfortune of having P.E. teachers who equated a person’s self-worth with his/her athletic ability. That left some of us marginalized and fair game for being bullied. I wish I could have had a teacher like Coach Dan Stanton. He was a real credit to the profession and to eastern Montana. We would all do well to strive to emulate his wonderful example. My deepest condolences go to the family and to the myriad of people whose lives he touched in his much-too-short life.

Miles City lost one of its “Very Best” in Dan Stanton. I will forever be grateful for what he taught both of my boys, Brandon & Marty, in the classroom, and on & off the football field. He was truly a very fine man. My heart goes out to Kim, Kasey, Kyle, and all the Stanton families. I will always cherish the ” friendly rivalry” we had between the Broncos and the Steelers. R.I. P. Coach Stanton

Everyone of my four kids had the privilege of being taught by Mr. Stanton and as beautifully put by my youngest daughter “He made history come alive!” He was a favorite and truly cared about the kids and what he taught them. He had a gift of teaching and giving and we are so thankful that he touched our lives. Our hearts and prayers go out to Kim, Kyle and Kasey and hope that the memories will help you in the upcoming months and years! Thank you for sharing your husband and father with this community!

God needed a good guy for his sideline and He sure has one now……Dan provided us all with a stellar example of a man of faith, integrity and quiet kindness. Our kids always enjoyed the opportunity to be in his presence especially when they could get a chuckle and a smirk out of Coach Stanton. 🙂 We are holding Kim, Kasey, Kyle & the Stanton families all close in our thoughts and prayers this day. Rest in peace Dan.

    September 13, 2015 at 7:37 pm

Dan was a wonderful person to know both in and out of school. He was a quiet person, but always got the point across. We had many discussions about the c word as we have both been down that same bumpy road. Dan was a very strong person and cared dearly about his students, players, and educational friends, but most of all his wife (Kim), and two wonderful sons, Kasey and Kyle. Miles City has last a real legacy and a special person from our community and he will be missed by anyone who knew him, not only in our community but other friends, families and coaches from all around who had the privilege of knowing Dan. You have definitely left your mark in our community and will be sadly missed by all. Thank you to Dan’s family for sharing such a wonderful person with all of us.

    September 13, 2015 at 8:38 pm

Our hearts are heavy for the family of Dan Stanton, yet we want to be happy for him, as he will never go through what he went through again. God decided He needed another true “Angel” and so he took your loved one. All three of the children enjoyed having Mr. Stanton for a teacher, and felt at home in his class. I myself, had never had a lot of contact with him, but relished in his revelry with the football team while Megan has been cheering. My husband Rick, knew him from Baker, and thought Dan was a swell guy. It seems he has touched many lives, even some of whom he had never met. God Bless the Family in this difficult time.

  27. Marissa Morford says

    September 13, 2015 at 8:48 pm

Mr. Stanton was the strong and silent type in my mind. When I was in Junior high I would see him with his boys at church every Sunday. Now I have children that are the ages his were and still He would sit in the balcony where all the parents with small children would struggle their way through mass. I asked him one Sunday why He sat up there with all the chaos and He smiled, slyly, and said it was fun to watch. I laughed, his words were filled with hidden meaning. There are some people in the world, you may not know their hearts, but they show their spirit by their steadfast loyalty. Being present and humble. I cannot say I knew Mr. Stanton well, but he has always had my deepest respect. As Saint Francis of Assisi said, speak the gospel at all times and if you have to, use words. That is the presence Mr.Stanton brought. A role model to young families in our church and community. And I loved Jeopordy in his class! My family is praying for you and yours.

    To the Stanton family,
Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am to hear of the passing of Dan. Dan was one of my track coaches and history teacher in high school. There are two instances about Dan that I would like to say impacted my life and showed what a great person he was. First one, was a few years back as we were both waiting in the Billings Clinic waiting room. My two very young boys were driving me crazy, and Dan just sat there with a smile on his face as he watched me deal with them. I looked at Dan and said, “tell me it gets better!” He just smiled and said ” they will still be driving you crazy even when they are in their twenties!” He had a sense of humor! The second memory I have of Dan was when I was in high school. I was stressing and worrying about something and talking to him, and what is funny is I don’t even remember now what I was even stressing about, but I do remember what Dan told me. “Don’t stress, it is not going to make the situation any better. Stop worrying!” Of course I was thinking a lot easier said then done Coach! But he was absolutely right! Just trust that everything will work out the way it should. All of my prayers for the Stanton family. May God comfort you all in the days ahead.

Steve and I have so many wonderful memories of Dan and of all the Stanton family. Many of mine were from Dan as a young boy with freckles. He was always such a polite and helpful child and we certainly are blessed to have known him. Many of Steve’s memories are of Dan as a child, Man and Coach. He will be so missed by so many people. What a legacy he leaves behind for his children, family, the many players he has coached and students impacted through his teaching and every community in which he has resided. Our prayers go out to all of you as you grieve this tremendous loss. I picture Jim meeting him at the gates of Heaven and singing his very own rendition of “Danny Boy”

We are so sorry for your loss but hope that you can find some comfort knowing that Dan is with his Heavenly Father now and is no longer in pain. There are so many in our community who have gained a “little piece” of Coach Stanton and we’re grateful for that and the lessons on strength and character he taught our children along the way. We were all blessed to know him and have him guide our children. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

May God comfort and seize the pain for family, friends, and the rest of the lives Coach Stanton had embraced and touched in his life. Memories, he left individually with each and everyone of his players is a reminder that his passion, and strength for sports, can stil live on. Coach Stanton showed courage, fairness, and the strong part of each person to become true and real in ourselves. His winning fight is still and always will be victory. He gave everything his best shot. Coach Stanton you will truly missed! Thank you to the family , and friends, and everyone for letting Coach Stanton be a part of my nephew’s life.. Not a day will go by he would not try his hardest for Coach Stanton. “People who say it cannot or it will not be done…. Should not intreuppt those who are doing it.”

I am Not even sure how to put into words the heartbreak of the story! Mr. Stanton touched so many lives and not just as a football coach but as a teacher and a friend! I Had the pleasure of having Mr. Stanton for an eighth-grade history class and I can still remember many valuable things he taught me just not about history but life in general! As I look through my junior high and high school careers I can probably count on two hands teachers that stand out as having influence in my life and he was one of them even though I only had him for one year. I think that speaks volumes to the type of person he was. In his far too short life I think he it’s fair to say he touched-more lives than Life’s then many do who lived to be hundred! May His family rest in peace knowing what A truly amazing man he was and the amazing things he did for everyone he knew in the short time he was with us! God bless The Stanton family in the months and years to come as a struggle with this loss! Please know his death was not in vain and he will be remembered by those who knew him and even those who didn’t for generations to come by all the good he did! Also may the community of Miles City find peace as well and use his example to make all of us better people! RIP Dan! All my love and prayers to the Stanton family!

I am so sorry your family had to go through this. I wish I had a magic wand to take away your pain, but unfortunately life does not work that way. The fact that we cannot see our loved ones or communicate with them after the transformation that we call death, is no proof that they cease to exist.

I’m still feeling the numbness of hearing of Dan’s passing. We were fast friends from the first time we met as 7th graders at a track meet in Glendive. At first I knew him as “that really nice kid from Baker”. Hard to believe we would later go on and compete in track together at Dickinson, then sit side by side at numerous track meets and basketball games as coaches. I have so many great memories of Dan and his witty humor. I will truly miss this great man, friend, colleague, and kindred spirit. I am so saddened for your loss, but know you, me, and so many others are better people because of Dan. I continue to pray for you all.

    Kim and family,
I had the honor of serving with Dan last year, my only year, returning to the school I graduated from. The one thing I noticed and felt in very short time was, the respect he received from the students and athletes. The students and athletes loved him; that too was easy to see. Being a great teacher as well as a great coach is not an easy feat. He was definitely both. His legacy will live in the halls of Custer County District High School forever. The Blue and Gold will shine brighter than ever now; with Dan looking down over his field and school from his magnificent vantage stage in heaven. May the lord bless you and your family especially now in your time of need.

    Oh Mr.Stanton,
I will always fondly remember the “news game” that you had us students play. I loved it and it was such a friendly reminder of the importance of keeping up with current events. In track, you always had this quiet, yet kind of scary presense (I guess what I mean is we always made sure we were doing what we were supposed to…..when you were watching haha!) You and JP always had a way of finding stuff out..so uncanny! Leading by example was what you did so well. Teddy Roosevelt’s quote, “Speak softly and carry a big stick” will always remind me of you What a fight you fought! Kim, Kasey, and Kyle: my sincerest condolences to all of you!!

    To the Stanton family:
Today, I remembered a time from when I was in Mr. Stanton’s World History class. We played a trivia game once a week that involved current state, nation, and worldwide news, and it was a good way to make us stay up-to-date on the news! I remember one week, one of the questions Mr. Stanton asked was, “Who was the winner of the Heisman Trophy last night?” I was the first person to get the answer out, and Mr. Stanton stared at me for a few seconds and then grinned a huge grin… I was in a class with many football players and athletes, and he never let them forget that I got that answer before any of them. He was such a wonderful and influential teacher, and I am sad that I didn’t get to know him as well as others did. However, I will always treasure my year of World History and trivia games with him. Sometimes our class was pretty rambunctious, and once in a while I would catch him with a tiny secret smile on his face, like he secretly thought we were hilarious, but he didn’t want us to know that he knew! I am inspired by the way he carried himself through his battle, and I hope that you guys can find some peace knowing that he truly positively impacted everyone he met. Thank you, to the Stanton family, for sharing this wonderful man with our community.
    Sincerely, Chelsea Okerman

Turn to the Holy Scriptures for guidance and to help soothe your heart. Psalms 34:18 assures us that God is near to those broken at heart and crushed in spirit. WOW! What a legacy Dan left behind. Knowing Dan, I bet he had no clue the thousands of lives he impacted. I imagine he is looking down at us; amazed, surprised, and humbled from the overwhelming love, respect, and support from our community, friends, and students. Dan taught and also coached our three sons ranging from little league, junior high track to hs basketball, track, and football. . He was such a positive influence to not only our sons, but to so many players, students, and parents. Dan traveled with us to many DSU football games throughout Montana and North Dakota. We had many hours of windshield time and had many lengthy discussions on several different topics to include our families. You could always hear in his voice how proud he was of Kasey and Kyle. Rest easy Dan in knowing this world is in a better place based on the positive impact you had on thousands of lives.
