Daniel Kraft, age 78, of Otter, MT passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Montana.
Dan was born in Sayle, Montana on September 24, 1937, the son of Carl and Clara (Jacobs) Kraft. He attended Indian Creek School and St. Labre School and graduated from Broadus High School in 1954 when he was 16 years old. Dan’s father passed away in 1954 and Dan helped his mother and brother run the ranch. During this time Dan did a lot of riding for their ranch and the neighbors. One riding job was to trail cattle from Powderville to Sonnette in the middle of a big snow storm. Dan met Evelyn Hanlan at a country dance and they were married in April of 1966. Dan worked at the Broadus Standard Station which he eventually leased and ran for several years. He later worked in Colstrip at the Coal Plants and later worked for Powder River County. Dan and Evelyn moved to the ranch on Indian Creek in the Sayle community and started ranching again.
Dan enjoyed baseball and played with Ashland and Otter teams. He also enjoyed music and played for some country dances with friends just for fun and also enjoyed guiding hunters and helped the Fletchers during hunting season. He was always there when someone needed a hand setting up Christmas directions and loved pitching in at family gatherings.
Dan is survived by his wife Evelyn of Otter, MT; two special cousins Mary & Rose both of Alaska, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Clara; four brothers: Charles, James, John and Emery.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 5, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus, MT. Interment will follow in the Valley View Cemetery.
