In Memory Of

Daniel P. Foote age 77 of Ashland, MT

May 28, 1940 – January 14, 2018

Daniel Paul Foote Ota’tave Ve’ese “Blue Bird” passed away January 14, 2018 in Billings, Montana. Daniel was born in Lame Deer, Montana to Edward Foote Sr. and Margret Mexican Cheyenne King on May 28th, 1940. He grew up in Ashland, Montana and went to school in Ashland then graduated from St. Labre High School. He then went to college at Haskell in Lawrence, Kansas. He then came home and met his first wife, Joy Whitewolf. They were married on February 27, 1959 and with this marriage they had four children: Elvira (Melvin) WoodenThigh, Sr. Joseph (Mary) Foote, Sr. Edward (Milie) Foote, Sr. Christie Foote; 13 grandkids,  19 great grandchildren; sisters Georgiann Kellm (Bruce), Teresa Littlebird; brother, George Littlehead Jr.; special nieces, Emma King and Charlene Robinson

He served  the Northern Cheyenne People as a Tribal Council member for over twenty years. As a tribal council he was involved in decisions involving the first P.L. 638 contracting, coal lease cancellations, implementing the Indian Child Welfare Act, economic development projects, federal reserved water rights implementation, 107th meridian settlement with the Crow Tribe, establishment of the Lame Deer High School and many other historic actions taken by the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council. He also worked for the Tribal Headstart program as a director/teacher for many years where earned his certificate in education. Finally he worked and retired at PP&L.

Daniel was a ceremonial person in both the Cheyenne Sundance and the Native American Church. Therefore, he was called upon to be a painter or an instructor. He was also a road man in the Native American Church where he was often asked to run meetings.

He was also called upon to administer the painting of the deceased for the final journey from this life to the next. He was a member of the Elk Horn Scraper society.

He was a humble and kind man; he never had a bad word for anyone. He had many friends in his community, people often called upon him for prayers and to do blessings he never turned anyone away when they needed help. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved playing his harmonica for his family members.

Daniel was loved by so many and he will be greatly missed.

On August 28th, 2003 he married Judith Littlebird and he became dad to her eight children: Elaine, Delbert, Shannon, Annissa, Delmarie, Helena (Nickolas), Jonie and Shandel (Whitney). . He had a special bond with each of her children. He loved each of them as much as his own children.

He is survived by, Mexican Cheyenne, King, Littlebird, Littlehead, Gardner, Sioux, Rowland, Foote, Fisher, Harris, Fox, Hart, Wooenthigh, Two Moons, Whiteman, Brady, Tallwhiteman, many relatives in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and Poplar, Montana.

He had a very large family and friends, too many to mention. We are sorry if we didn’t mention you. All his friends and family were loved tremendously by Daniel.
