Daniel Todd Hinnaland passed away on June 18, 2022 at the Prairie Community Nursing Home in Terry with his daughter Barb by his side. Todd was born October 26, 1936 in Terry, Montana to Daniel S. and Gertrude Kerr Hinnaland. He grew up on the Hinnaland ranch located about 15 miles west of Brockway, Montana as the big brother to his younger six siblings: Robert (Bob) Hinnaland, Kay Wolff, Dana Wahl, Jack Hinnaland, Jill Beecher and Mari Pederson. Todd and his siblings had a rather secluded upbringing due to the remoteness of the ranch but enjoyed visits, holidays, and brandings with neighbors and their large extended Kerr and Hinnaland families. With so many siblings, life was never boring on the ranch. When the kids weren’t helping with chores, they were riding horses, hunting, fishing or finding some mischief to get into. Todd and Bob were inseparable as youngsters and maintained a very strong bond throughout their lives. Todd went to grade school at various country schools including the Coal Creek School and the Brockway School. He lived in the school dormitory in Circle while attending Circle High School and graduated in 1955. He had a very close relationship with his Norwegian-born grandfather, Tolleif Hinnaland, and after graduation he worked with Tolleif on the ranch and also did some rodeoing, mainly saddle bronc riding. He entered the Army in 1959 and was stationed at the Presedio in San Francisco for two years. His duties included running the motor pool and driving the bus for the 6th Army Band which went to State Fairs and other important functions in California. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to the Circle area where he drove truck for his brother, Bob. Todd started working road construction in 1962 and he worked for various contractors throughout Montana. He knew every road in Montana like the back of his hand. To help support his family during the winter months he trapped, bartended and plowed snow for the County Road crew. He retired in 1995 after nearly 30 years with the Operating Engineers as a heavy equipment operator and foreman. Before joining the Army, Todd met the love of his life, Karen Undem, a tall, pretty registered nurse from the Bloomfield area. On March 17, 1962, Todd and Karen were married in a small ceremony in Circle, Montana. To this union, two daughters were born, Kathryn Marie and Barbara Jo. The family lived in Circle, Miles City and Glendive before settling in Terry in February of 1970. They purchased the Stith log house located across from Murn Park, which the family still owns. Todd and Karen were very generous and welcoming and the log house was a hub of activity for the girls’ friends to include slumber parties, tents in the back yard, snowmobiling, skating, swimming parties and campouts in the green school bus that Todd converted into a motor home. Todd was a gifted mechanic and could work on his own and his kids’ vehicles to keep them running smoothly. He was a registered HAM radio operator (KC7FY) for a number of years and he and Karen attended various HAM events in the region building many life-long friendships. Todd enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling, camping, RVing, playing pool and watching his younger brother Jack ride in rodeos. Later in life, he enjoyed some memorable hunting excursions with his nephews. In retirement, Todd and Karen enjoyed many road trips around the US with his brother Bob and wife Mary Alice, as well as a couple winters in Arizona, memorable cruises to Alaska and through the Panama Canal, and visits with their daughters. When Karen became ill, Todd was a dedicated caregiver for several years, driving her back and forth to specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota dozens of times. Throughout his life, Todd was a colorful character who said exactly what he was thinking and did exactly what he wanted. Even up until the last week of his life, he enjoyed a good banter as his wonderful caregivers at the Terry Nursing Home will attest.
Todd was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen, brother Bob Hinnaland, sister Jill Beecher, his parents, in-laws Mike and Evelyn Undem, brothers-in-law Bill Wahl, Aldo Wolff, and Roland Pederson, and two nephews, Danny Wahl and Zane Hinnaland. He is survived by: daughter Kathryn West (Mark) of Floyd, VA and their son John West; daughter Barbara Hinnaland (Mike Humphreys) and their family Evan (Liz) Humphreys and Blake, Tyler Humphreys, Connor Humphreys; sister-in-law Mary Alice Hinnaland, brother Jack (Debbie) Hinnaland, sisters Kay Wolff, Dana Wahl, and Mary Pederson, brother-in law Glen Beecher, along with many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Todd will be buried in the Hinnaland family plot in the Prairie County Cemetery with his wife, Karen and grandparents, Tolleif and Marie Hinnaland. The family is grateful for the excellent care he was given the last years of his life by Dora Huckins and family and the caring staff of the Prairie Community Nursing Home who helped him adjust to his memory decline and cared for him as if he were family.

Dearest Kathy, Mark, and John and Barb, Mike and Family-I am so sorry, I will be unable to attend the service for your Dad, my friend, due to Covid. Of course you know I became your Other Mother in 1970 when you moved to Terry and your Mom and I became forever friends. Of course along with Karen’s friendship came Todds and many years of his goofy wisecracks and bottles of cheap wine. He will be missed.

Conard Smith aka Smitty says
I’m sending this for my dad who is 81. He knew Todd from his time at the Presidio July of 1959 to March of 1961. Todd and my dad were good friends, he jokingly called him his drinking buddy. Todd would’ve known My dad as Smitty back then. My dad was only 17 when he entered the military and Todd actually helped talk him out of re-enlisting in the military, which would’ve ultimately led to him being right in the middle of the Vietnam War and I may never have been born.
My dad speaks highly and fondly of Todd and would like to send his condolences to the family for their loss.
