In Memory Of

Danny Seminole

December 4, 1989 – April 4, 2012

Danny Ray Seminole (Mo´ȯhnaha´evaoo´estse, Elk Stands with Wife) was born to Ambrose Seminole, Sr. and the late Jolita Morrison on December 4, 1989 and died in a tragic car accident on April 4, 2012 south of Lame Deer, Montana at the age of 22. Danny Ray left this world much too soon and with him he took the life that might have been in the future. Today, we remember and honor this young Cheyenne man with the time he spent with us. His time was brief but within his short life we were fortunate to have been part of his time on earth as a son, a brother, a nephew, a grandson, a cousin, a uncle and as a friend.
Danny Ray grew up in a close-knit family and became a young man who was family oriented. He was devoted to his parents and brothers, sister as well as other relatives. And with this devotion he enjoyed family gatherings especially, those with plenty of food. Danny lost his mother at an early age but as a boy and a young man he became close to his step-mother Clementine whom he called Mom. And with an equal closeness to his mom he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and brothers. During his at home time he enjoyed the company of his niece Nesta Seminole. Even at the age of 22 he was a home body who was happy in the peaceful environment of his family life. In keeping with the family spirit Danny Ray was named after his uncle the late Burton Seminole whom he held in high regard and carried his Cheyenne name with honor.
He was also born into a family with a rich historical background as a direct descendant of Northern Cheyenne Chief Dull Knife and Ruben Black Horse. A history that speaks of a time when the Northern Cheyenne, under the leadership of Chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf, were forcibly removed from their beloved northern plains to the Oklahoma Indian Territory. The history further speaks of the people´s escape from the Indian Territory on September 9, 1878 and the Fort Robinson Outbreak on January 9, 1879. In addition, he is a descendant of Ruben Black Horse who was among the first Cheyenne Scouts that served under General Nelson A. Miles at Fort Keogh now present day Miles City, Montana.
But he also had a life outside his family. He was a member of the Lame Deer Drum Group with James Walks Along as the leader of the singing group. He was also a member of the Lonnie Little Bird Branding Boys. The branding boys are a group who helped with the annual branding event. When he wasn´t singing at a pow-wow or branding calves he was a poker player. He enjoyed playing the poker machines and hanging out with his friends. He also participated in the Cheyenne Sweat Ceremonies and the Native American Church. He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends.
Danny Ray attended Colstrip High School in Colstrip, Montana. He also went to school at the Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, South Dakota. And in 2008 he graduated from the Lame Deer High School in Lame Deer, Montana. While in school he participated in football and basketball. He also attended the Sheridan Community College in Sheridan, Wyoming after graduating from high school.
As a young man and a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe Danny Ray was just beginning to develop his experience and skills as a worker. Danny Ray was recently hired by the Crazy Mule Lumber Company of Montana as General Forestry Laborer. His previous jobs include the Northern Cheyenne Head Start Program where he worked as a Custodian for three years and he also worked for Charging Horse Casino of Lame Deer, Montana. A Security Guard at the Littlewolf Capitol Building in Lame Deer.
Danny Ray is survived by his parents Ambrose Sr. and Clementine Seminole. His sister Christina Seminole and his brothers, Reno, Ambrose, Jr., Terrance, Myron, Sebastian Seminole and Randall Whistling Elk and adopted sister Veronica Marshall.
Also surviving him is his marital aunts, Rene Prairie Bear, Barbara (Ryne) Harris, Diane (Neil) Bear Tusk, Lisa (John) Just, Brenda Debree, Tina (Delano) Harris, Charlene Little Old Man and Sherron American Horse. Survivors also include his paternal aunts; Victoria (Michael) Bear Comes Out and Mina R. Seminole. He is survived by his marital uncles; Tony Prairie Bear, Joseph Morrison, Jr., Curtis Salvador Morrison and Percy Morrison. He is also survived by his paternal uncles; Eugene (Marian) Seminole, Martin Seminole, Leon (Maxine) Seminole, Donald Seminole and Richard Foote.
Danny Ray also leaves behind his marital grandmothers; Dolores Yellow Eyes Morgan and Beatrice Small. On his paternal side of the family he is survived by his grandparents; Inez Wilson and Vernon and Rhonda Bull Coming, Leonard American Horse, Philomena American Horse and Adeline Spotted Elk. Other survivors include his adopted brother Jehon Walks Along and his best friends Kemo Lopez and Nolan Limber Hand.
Other relatives surviving Danny Ray include his paternal relatives; The Seminole, Yellow Eyes, Sooktis, One Bear, Wolf Name, Fisher, Charette, Rising Sun, Bright Wings, Bird In Ground and the Soiux families. And also his maternal relatives which include the Spotted Elk, Standing Elk, Night Walker, Belly Mule, White Hawk, Red Neck, Pine and Strange Owl families. Danny Ray comes from a large family. Please accept our apology if we have forgotten to mention other family members.
He was preceded in death by his mother Jolita Morrison, his grandmothers Lenora Red Cloud, Eleanor Morrison and his grandparents Alfred Hubert and Mary Jane (Yellow Eyes) Seminole.

I remember Danny from when I use to work with the Boys & Girls Club. He was such a great kid back then and although I haven’t had the chance to get to know him while he was older, he seemed like he turned out to be a great man with so much life to live. My condolences and prayers go out to the family, may he rest in peace.

Hey, Danny wanted to tell you I’ll never forget you. I know we didn’t talk everyday but when I needed someone you where always there to listen and give me advise. I’ll never forget the day we had that deep convo. and you told me “No matter what you’ll always be here for me because that’s what family is for.” So to this day when I start feeling down, I always remember that and I start to feel better. I still feel bad that I couldn’t make it to most of your services because yours and my grandma’s where at the same time on the same days but I know you understand. Rest In Peace Danny Ray Seminole, I love you and miss you everyday but I know your in a better place and your watching over all of us keeping us safe.
